Ashita No Ousama Vol. 3

Summary:

Ohara is still displeased over the fact that everyone fawns over Misore instead of her. She even accused Yuu for taking sides with Misore. Yuu tries to lift her spirits and told her that she is in the middle of writing a new script, Hana, and she has the perfect part for Ohara to play. Meanwhile, Touya is getting busier with his drama work and all the interviews Kina arranged for him. A tired Touya finally told Kina to cancel every interview and rode off in his bike.

After reading the unfinished script, Ohara was happy and felt that the lead character seems perfect for her. However, Yuu announced that she wanted Ohara to play the show-girl spirit, a supporting character. Ohara got angry and told Yuu she refuses to act in a supporting character and be behind Misore all the time. Ohara then went to a bar where she met another director, Hino, of Radium 100 theatre group. She complaint to him about her troubles and told him about Yuu's script. Later on, Ohara threatened to leave Garandou for Radium 100. However, Yuu did not blame her and even decided to go watch a Radium 100 play with her.

Everyone got a shocked when they realized that the play by Radium 100 was actually stolen from Yuu. It turns out that Hino took advantage of his conversations with Ohara who told him the script. A crying Yuu went back to the company and Shougo hugged her, only to be seen by Touya. Although Shougo told Yuu to be confident and show them that they're the real thing, Yuu lost her confidence. A guilty Ohara resigned from Garandou.

Yuu went to look for Touya to "borrow a little fighting spirit" only to be pushed away by him. Later at the TV company building, Shougo punched Hino in front of everyone, and the story spread to Touya. Curious, he went to ask Shougo about it, and found out about everything. Shougo told Yuu that he wants her to stage a one-day play with her script and said that if she didn't, it will forever haunt her. However, they're still lacking an actress for the Dolly (spirit-girl) role.

Touya came looking for Yuu to apologize and she told him about her troubles. Touya, who had already previously read the script, offers to play that role. However, it has to be a secret as Touya is still bonded to his contract. Even the play itself was a secret as they plan to promote another of Garandou's play but stage Hana on the first day. However, Touya slyly revealed to Hino and to those nearby that he will be appearing for the first night stage-play of Garandou. The rumour spreads and everyone was curious. Even Ohara came to watch.

From the start of the play, the audiences realized the similarity of it to Radium 100's play. Hino started to break out in cold sweat and tried to stop the play by accusing them as thieves. However, he was overpowered by the music of the play. Hana was a success and no one recognizes Touya as Dolly. A regretful Ohara came backstage to apologize and was accepted back into Garandou. A snooping reporter caught Touya leaving the building and realizes that he was Dolly. The news broke and suddenly Garandou & Yuu was bombarded by the reporters. An angry Kina slapped Touya for not understanding the work she put in as his manager. Touya warned her that she doesn't understand his needs as well.

An annual stage-play award results were published in a magazine, and Yuu heard about a famous and talented director/scripwriter/actor Kazuma Rin. She received a free ticket from Shougo to watch his play and bumped into Touya who came to watch as well. Both of them were very impressed with Kazuma Rin. After the play, they had dinner together. Yuu commented that this felt like a date, but Touya refuted and said he can't imagine her in a romantic relationship. He further innocently told a dissapointed Yuu that he can't afford the time to be in love and he thinks it's the same with her.

The next day, Kazuma Rin came looking for Shougo for an introduction to Touya, only to find out it is Yuu he should pursue if he wants the introduction. He wants Touya for his next production, and Yuu told him that Touya already saw Kazuma's play and there is no need for Yuu to be the middle person. Before leaving, Kazuma manages to persuade Yuu to restage Hana. It was later on confirm that Touya has accepted Kazuma's production for his comeback to the stage. Meanwhile, Yuu is busy reproducing Hana with Ohara as Dolly and a new actress for Misore's original role. However, troubles arises almost at once when Yuu realizes that Ohara is copying Touya's Dolly. Ohara got angry and slapped her.

Review:

A 300+ page volume! This was crazy to summarize!!! But it is a wonderful volume nonetheless. I really started to enjoy this manga from this volume onwards.

First off, am really really pissed off with the character Ohara. She is truly truly spoilt, and for no reason other than her own vainness that she is a great actress. She thinks she's a diva who does not deserve anything less than the lead role, and when things doesn't go her own way, she threatened and even slap the director.

Honestly, I kind of forgive her when she realizes her mistakes in the middle of the volume, but what the heck is going on with her when she slapped Yuu???? I didn't even feel that angry when Kina slapped Touya. Kina tried her best even though she doesn't realize that it is not what Touya wanted, and for that, I think her actions is justified to some extent. But not with Ohara. Ohara is just one plain B****. I wonder why Yuu even tolerates her.

The play Hana is very interesting - only for the fact that for once, its scenes were shown more extensively compared to the other plays which appear in this manga. Touya makes a very pretty spirit-girl as well =P

As for the romantic development between Touya and Yuu, it is clear that Touya felt jealousy. But he doesn't seem to realize this and has focus his energy towards his acting, hence his innocent comments to Yuu during their dinner date. However, Yuu is clearly in tune with her feelings and cherishes the tickets that he gave her (did not summarized this part).

Kiss Vol. 2

Summary:

The chapter opened with a flashback to 7 years old Kae going for piano lessons reluctantly for the first time. She met university student Goshima who was to be her piano teacher. Although hating her lessons at first, she grew to like it and listening to Goshima play Canon brought a skip to her heart. At present time, a 16 years old Kae decided to play Canon for the next recital.

A new character - Tamaki appeared at the music school looking for Goshima. Having similar disposition and mannerism, Tamaki turns out to be his cousin. That night, everyone went to watch Goshima's performance at another pub. Tamaki made a surprise sit-in by playing the saxophone which complements perfectly with Goshima's piano. The both of them made a striking pair, and Kae was jealous because she felt like a kid next to Goshima. The next day Tamaki teases Goshima for his feelings and protectiveness over Kae. Unfortunately, Kae walked right into them while they "seemingly kiss". An angry Kae toss her papers at them, crying.

Kae fell sick with the flu, and when Goshima visited her, she kissed him, announcing that he better get sick as well and she will kill him if he passes the flu to Tamaki as well. Kae got better in time for the recital, while Goshima really caught the flu from her. Kae told Tamaki that she envied her and Tamaki just replied by kissing her kiss between girls!!! kyaaa!!! hehehehe saying that she is returning Goshima's kisses. Tamaki really like teasing Kae as she felt envy herself that Goshima managed to find a someone that he cares for whereas Tamaki doesn't.

April 1st arrived and Kae's waiting for Goshima for a date, but he couldn't make it. Instead, he sent his younger brother, Nobu, to inform her. The two ended up spending the whole day chatting about Goshima. Nobu observes that Goshima is very protective of Kae even though she doesn't realize it and that Kae's his main weakness.

Kae's birthday arrived, and Goshima gave her perfume Estee Lauder's Pleasures! I have that perfume!! it smells wonderful. He caught her dancing alone with his coat, and teases her about it, but still dance with her in the end. They attracted alot of people and Uchida observes that Kae is getting prettier and that many guys are going to fall for her. This observation came true as a couple of guys started approaching her. Goshima had to "exert his influence" to make the guys back off actually he's not even exerting any influence. he just glared at them!!! Naturally Kae got mad at him as she felt he was acting like her father.heheheeh, Goshima's worried bout her getting caught by another guy, and she's worried that they're not equal because of his maturity.

The final chapter closes of with Goshima getting sick again and Kae visited him. The sick Goshima dreamt about his parent's final days before the plane crash and when he woke up, he started wondering about death. Kae left the house to buy more medicine, and Goshima's inner heart worried non-stop about what if Kae also left him because of an accident. However, Kae's safe return brought him back to reality and he smiled and said that she is his biggest failure in life.

Review:

Unlike Volume 1, here we get to see much of Goshima's own insecurities regarding this relationship with Kae. Although he still acted cool and nonchalant, it is not all that simple. Kae is very attractive, eventhough she doesn't realize it, and always intrepret his protective actions wrongly.

Skip Beat! Vol 19

Summary:

Kyouko seems worried about her Kuon and questioned Kuu. She felt that she has split from the Kuon she imagined to a total new character during her impersonation. Kuu told her that there is nothing wrong with it - he merely wanted her to act as his son, not the "real son"....meaning he did not want her to become the original Kuon, but to create a whole new Kuon. The exercise was considered successful. Furthermore, Kuu said that if Kyouko can overcome her weakness of "preference in only certain princess roles", she would be an incredible actress. President Lory called, telling Kuu that a seemingly angry Ren wants to meet with him.

Later on, Kuu & Ren finally met as father and son in the presence of President Lory. Not much details or history is revealed, but it was indicated that Kuu's popularity as an actor have overshadowed his son and because of this, Ren could not stand on his own and escaped with the help President Lory to start over again as a fresh actor in Japan. He has not been in contact with his parents for years. And Julia (Ren's mother) has been yearning for her son. That is the main reason why Kuu came back to Japan - to ask Ren to be Kuon again for a while and film a video message for his mother.

The next day at DM set, Kyouko apologizes for acting in front of Ren and pretending to not know him. They chatted about her character as Kuon, and Ren complimented her, saying that she manage to portray Kuon's feelings for his dad perfectly. This is an indirect reference that Ren loves his father very much, and when Kyouko later told Kuu what Ren said, he was very touched.

However, Kuu has decided to return to US sooner than expected because his mission (the video tape of Kuon) is complete and he wishes to bring it back to Julia asap. During his goodbye party, both Ren & Kyouko attended, and Kyouko announced that she will not run away and willing to take the bully girl role (in the drama Box-R) while Ren said - inside the video he taped - that he will also not run away and take up the challenge to act as a killer in his next role.

Review:

It is wonderful to finally see some revealing secrets regarding Ren's past. It is quite certain that Ren must have murdered or tried to murder someone before in US. As with my predictions in volume 17 and also the scene this time where he told Kuu that he will not run away from the role of a murderer, I wonder how this will turn out.

Another interesting part is how the scene manage to show a very nice parallelism between Ren & Kyouko in the final chapter in terms of their acting development. As it is shown from Kuu's POV, who refer to the both of them as his son Kuon - it brought the level of parallelism even higher than just a normal "I will not run away from this role" scene.

First off, I just noticed that I missed recapping the final 2 chapters of Skip Beat Vol.18!!!!!! How in the world did i managed to do that, I will never know. But the post has been edited......and next up will be Volume 19!

Ai no Tame Ni

Summary:
Harada Aki is a popular girl with plenty of good friends, both girls & guys. She is also known as the queen of introductions! Plenty of couples hooked up because of her, and she's always planning camps and goukons whenever anyone wants a help to find a boyfriend/girlfriend. Aki's special talent is remembering names as well as their phone numbers. lolz

One day, a couple of guys from another class came up. Turns out one of them wants to get a girlfriend and needed Aki's help. Although she does not know both of them, Aki willingly cook up a goukon she planned everthing within a minute with her trusty handphone! Seeing her actions, the other guy, Furuya Takahiro, laughed and called her a miu piao!

That weekend at the goukon, Furuya came as well. Although still angry at him, Aki continued to make the goukon a success by livening up the atmosphere with silly antics. In the middle of the goukon, Furuya suddenly dragged her out and they left together. Aki was so mad because she felt that she had ditched everyone else, making Furuya laughed.

A few days later, both of the bump into each other on the street and Aki asked for Furuya's number, seeing that they are "kind of friends". However her phone's capacity has reached its limit! that phone appearantly can save up to 500 numbers! Aki's amazing! Undaunted, Aki still asked Furuya to give his number, saying that she is capable of remembering it! it became a running gag in the story when Furuya would just suddenly ask Aki his number and she would always recite it correctly, which just makes Furuya laugh. They chatted about Aki's matchmaking skills and Furuya stated that he now know why Aki has so many friends.

They met up again in the teacher's office, when Aki overheard a teacher saying that the upcoming school activites to pull out weeds off the track field! will be held on the day of the fireworks. Angry, Aki demanded that it is unfair since the girls have to prepare beforehand and will be busy the whole day! The teacher just told her that she'll have take care of it alone if she's so adamant...what kind of teacher is that?!!
The day of the fireworks, poor Aki alone is pulling out weeds, when Furuya appears! yeah, like you readers did not expect that! hahaha They spent the whole day in the hot field and only finished by night time. Because of Furuya's kindness, Aki became more attentive of Furuya and his actions around school. Yay! she's falling in love~~
One day, a guy came while Aki & Furuya was chatting and asked her to introduced him to other girls, since the he doesn't like the girl she hook him up with in the first place. Angry, Aki refused because both sides (boy and girl) are her friends. The guy got angry as well and said that she is high and mighty, and that if it wasn't because she could introduce him to girls, he wouldn't be friends with a boring girl like her! And he just walked away.

When Furuya asked if it's alright to just let things off like that, Aki replied yes, because she could see the truth in his words. She was too proud of her matchmaking abilities. Furuya just patted her head and said that he felt it was alot of fun being with her. Aki started crying and wondered how she can face her friend since she introduced such a jerk to her. Furuya stayed with her through her tears and advice her to apologize.

Later, a group of girls came to Aki and one of them asked to be introduced to Furuya, saying that she is interested in him. Aki was shocked, and promptly refused, saying that she likes him!!! And at that moment, Furuya was just standing behind her!!! Embarrassed, because she hadn't properly sort out her feelings, Aki ran off to the rooftop to hide.

However, the girls decided that since Aki helped them all the time before, it's their turn to help her! They dragged her into a classroom where Furuya was waiting, and locked them in together! There, Furuya confessed that he had liked Aki all along!!! When their friends and schoolmates who were all plastered along the windows of the classroom! shouted that he should kiss her, he did just that!

Review:

This is one of the sweetest one-shot high school romance I've ever read!!! It is really so sweet to see friendship and love this innocent. Other than the part where the guy said those cruel stuff to Aki, the rest was just what I would like to imagine my friendship with my schoolmates to be.

Aki's character is so nice that Furuya always laughed at her. But I could feel his respect behind his laugh. For example, at the goukon, Aki brought plenty of pretty and nice girls whom she knows the guys would like. Although Furuya teased that she's not those kind of evil-high-school girl who would bring ugly girls to enhance her own beauty, I could feel that he likes this part of hers who only wants good for her friends.

Definitely a manga that I've read over and over again.

Skip Beat! Vol 18 (edited)

Summary:
Yay! The hot pink LoveMe suit made its appearance after such a long time!!

Kyouko is very pissed off with this assignment of taking care of Super VIP, Hollywood major star, former Hozu Shuuhei it's former because he decided to dump that name for a reason and even gave it a grand burial!! Kuu-san while he's back in Japan. fireworks please.

Flashback to President Lory suggesting to Ren about meeting him. Ren did not answer, but look pained.... back to present time, Yashiro rushed in to inform Ren that he saw Kyouko together with Kuu on the TV. the programme is of course showing Kuu's grand arrival back to Japan

That evening at the hotel, Kyouko finally finish preparing Kyoto-style food for Kuu. However, he refuses to eat it, giving all sorts of excuses. It has been that way since his arrival. Kuu seems bent on making Kyouko mad! Meanwhile, Ren called President Lory - asking about Kyouko's situation with Kuu...he seems suspicious on what the president & Kuu are up to.
Back at the hotel, the war between Kuu & Kyouko is still going on. The fight, in short, is about whether Kuu will eat the food prepared by her. Kuu is surprised by Kyouko's determination in not giving in! Naturally, he lost and went running to President Lory instead! lolz

At President Lory's house, Kuu revealed that no matter what, he have to get Kyouko angry/mad enough so that she can go crying to Ren. Feeling worried, he asked the president whether Ren will really come to him on his own accord. President Lory was confident that Ren would, if it is something regarding Kyouko.

After coming back to the hotel, Kuu found Kyouko waiting for him, and apologizing for their fight earlier. our Kyouko is worried about getting fired :) All is alright again, when Kyouko saw a music programme news about Sho. Seems like he is dominating the charts with all his releases and is currently considered as the top musician/singer in the Japan music industry!
This shocked Kyouko to oblivion and she was more convinced than ever to not accept roles similar to Mio from DM. Overhearing her conversation on the phone, Kuu reprimanded her about her choosiness and gave her some advice as well as a lesson - she is to act as Kuu's son for a day. now comes the confirmation! drumrolls... The son's name is Kuon! Similar to Corn right? Even Kyouko got confused by the names at first.

Having no idea on how to act as Kuu's perfect son, Kyouko was feeling troubled. When meeting with Ren at the DM set, she wanted to ask him for advice, but realizes that she should not always depend on him. Ren on the other hand, is getting even more suspicious at Kyouko's weird antics. Back in her dressing room, Kyouko remembered back on the words Ren said when he was advicing her on Mio. She realizes she can mirror her act on a certain perfect being - Corn!!!

Early that morning, President Lory receives yet another call from Ren!! He is more determined now in finding out what is going on with Kyouko-Kuu. President Lory smiled...
At the hotel, Kuu woke up to the sounds of his son!!! Eating the horrible breakfast his son prepared, because in Kyouko's mind, the son can't cook! Kuu looked blessed. And Kyouko, who had never felt a parent's love could not control herself and started crying.

After breakfast Kyouko followed Kuu to several TV events and bumped into both Ren & Yashiro. Ren was surprised to see Kyouko pretending 'not to know him' and got an even bigger shocked when Kuu suddenly appeared and called her Kuon. However he quickly hid his emotions and greeted Kuu as a stranger. Later that night, a serious Ren called President Lory.

Review:

Honestly, I think my recap this time is not so good...haiz.... so here's a super condensed version of this volume:

Kuu came back to Japan for a reason - to force Ren to meet him (for some reason). He hatched a plan with President Lory for Kyouko to come "take care" of him. During that time, he will try to make Kyouko go to Ren to complain about him. Ren will then surely find Kuu! However, in the middle, the story turns to Kyouko's problems regarding her acting roles. Therefore, Kuu (who is suppose to be the bully at first) decided to help her! And that is why, Kyouko is acting as Kuon!

Back to my review, I find this volume extremely interesting. The fact that we know Ren = Corn, and that it is implied that Corn = Kuon, we can safely infer that Ren is Kuu's son. All that is left is why their father-son relationship degenerated to the current state in which Ren refuses to meet him and why he is so desperate to meet Ren.

It is really cute how Ren tried to find out what the heck is going on, but don't dare to poke too deep into the matter. I can't wait for the father-son meeting!!

To those who follow my reviews, I am so sorry for not updating recently. As mentioned in my previous post, my external hard disk crashed and I did not have any mood to write any reviews not even my beloved Vanilla Ice or Skip Beat!

But today, I'm here to show some works of the very talented StarMasayume! I got to meet her in the StageStorm forum and saw some of her works there as well as in devianART. Now there might be a few of you out who had already known of Star and seen her artworks, so I'm sure that you would agree with me how good she is. I am especially in love with her chibi drawings!

Kiss Vol.1

Summary:

The scene opens with a 16 year old Ogawa Kae asking her piano teacher, Goshima Masayuki, "what does a deep kiss feel like?". They were both at the piano school which Kae has attended since she was 11. In the middle of the practice, Kae lost her temper and promptly runs off. As Goshima left the building later on, he look up to see Kae dumping sheets of music scores out of a window as revenge for his earlier attitude towards her. As he walked her home, Kae requested that he play the piano piece for their next class but was refused. so cute She then noticed blood on his finger. He purposely told her it was a papercut from the papers dumped on him, making Kae a little guilty. hehehe
Next day at the piano school, Goshima "received" some healing prizes bandages/plasters from Kae which made him laugh out loud. As their class started, he played "Say You Love Me" by Patti Austen for her. sort of like a thank you for the bandages? Later, the store owner remarks that Kae is already 16 and is turning into a young lady, which gave Goshima some food for thought. After watching Goshima performed at a pub, Kae was reminiscing about the past when she first met Goshima. She admitted that she hates the piano, but likes it too. This brought a smile to Goshima's face as he questioned her contradictions. Kae's answer was a kiss....on the lips, no less! After Kae missed a few classes, because of the kiss of course! Goshima noticed her standing outside the school. As she turns away from him, he remarked that she had given him "quite a challenge" which he would gladly take on. This is one cool piano teacher!

At their lessons, Goshima still treats Kae as usual meaning like a kid! which worries her - after all, they're still teacher-student and he's 8 years older. Her insecurities increase from some remarks by other customers and she felt her actions are childish.Furthermore, Goshima forbids her from going to another of his club performance because "it's not a place for kids". This made Kae mad, and she ran away to hide under a piano. lolz - this is what she always do since a kid As Goshima came to find her, she angrily said that being in love is bothersome and she does not want to anymore. Pulling her out, Goshima just kissed her, prompting her to call him a cheater. Later on, noticing the overflowing ashtray, Kae told him that he is smoking too much and asked if his mouth is lonely. She then pull the cigarette out of his mouth and kissed him.

A guy new side, unimportant character...hehehe, Nakayama, was fetching his 2 brothers from piano school as an excuse to meet Kae. someone has a crush. lolz But his brothers informed him that she already has a piano teacher boyfriend. Poor Nakayama started imagining an old pervert and was shocked when he saw the "real thing" next day. But he still got a chance to chat with Kae whereby she complained about Goshima. hehehe The shop owner saw them together and tried to make Goshima jealous by remarking that Nakayama is trying to pick Kae up. Goshima retorted a little too quickly ~ which means that he is bothered! that he is not in grade school anymore. The next day, Kae had yet another fight with Goshima because he wanted to cancel their Sunday date. It ended with Kae throwing her shoe at him, calling him a stupid old geezer and running off in the rain. The owner & Uchida-san couldn't stop laughing at the sidelines.

Nakayama found her sitting barefooted in the rain. She admitted that it wasn't the canceled date that she cares about, but Goshima's cool attitude that made her feel insecure. As Nakayama was on the verge of confessing his love, Goshima appears. Kae angrily told him that she will not apologize for her actions when Goshima just picked her up like a child! and took her back to the school. When asked if he will be worried if she goes out with another guy, he just gave the same reply as earlier - he is not in grade school anymore, so why worry. Back at home, Nakayama told his brother that he is not giving up on Kae yet.

Notes:
1) Kae's school is also a music store, which is why I use the word owner to represent the character of the Owner. lolz, understand?

2) Uchida's character suddenly appears in my summary, but actually he has made quite a number of appearances in the manga, always together with the Owner. He is also a piano teacher at the school/store.

3) The reason why I said Nakayama's character was unimportant because it really is! Although he is set up to be Goshima's rival in this first volume, I just have to point out that Kae & Goshima's relationship is actually quite strong (no matter how insecure Kae feels) and that no mere side character is going to make much of an impact. Futhermore, Nakayama rarely appears in the subsequent volumes.

Review:

First of all, I just want to rant. At first I wanted to write a post on either Ouran or Diamond Head (since I am quite behind on this 2 series) but my hard disk is suddenly unreadable, and I am freaking out because of the amount of mangas/movies/dramas etc that I have inside there! Anyway, since I could do neither because both manga's are inside my hard disk, I decided to start on a new series which is actually not new and is in fact completed (8 volumes) - Kiss.

Now this manga is written & drawn by the same mangaka who created Beauty is the Beast. In fact, Kiss is her first major work (meaning a long series). The drawing style is similar to BITB but not as clean. Actually, I would say that although her style is distinctive (I can point out at once if a work is hers or not), they're not as attractive as, say, Vanilla Ice. But it is her storyline that is a strength which kept her readers wanting for more. Kiss is the first "teacher-student" relationship manga which I actually like (I used to be turned off by the "very much older guy" kind of relationship stories that I almost never read them coz they always give me the feeling of a cradle snatcher. lolz). Another strength of Kiss is that there isn't much wasted space given on the storyline. Just like Skip Beat, it took me a very long time to "summarize" the entire volume. There is just so much I wanted to write. I feel bad everytime I have to skip out on a scene.

Reading back on my summary, I notice that I didn't potray Kae all that well - she comes off as a whiny brat who's always looking for a quarrel with her sensei/boyfriend. But she's not really like that. In fact, I really like Kae's character. She loves Goshima, and doesn't bother to hide it. She knows that he is more experience and cool-headed and she feels insecure because of that. But this doesn't prevent her from moving forward in the relationship. She fights him so he knows what she is feeling. In fact, Kae is one of the few female characters who is completely open and straightforward when it comes to relationship. She knows what she wants and doesn't hesitate in getting it. I think it is because of this that the relationship formula works in this story. Goshima on the other hand, never show his real feelings, and always acting "adult-like". But when it needs to, he does prove to her that he is serious too (even if it's just using a kiss).

10 Days

Summary:

By Miki Aihara the famous mangaka of Hot Gimmick!, the story started with an omiai marriage meeting - this is very common in Japan between high-school senior Aiko Takahashi and office manager/future CEO of his family's company Kiyosumi Shirakawa. Unlike most high-school girls, Aiko doesn't seem displeased with the omiai. In fact, she quite welcome it. Since they're strangers, Shirakawa suggested a 10-days trial where they would go on dates and get to know each other.

Day 2 since Day 1 = the omiai itself - holding hands. Turns out that Shirakawa is the shy/traditional/boring/nerdy kind which is cute actually. But at the end of the date, Aiko's ex-boyfriend turns up. this has to be fast since it's a oneshot. He seems like a nice guy though...Hmmm

Day 3 - Staring into each other's eyes romantically. Which Shirakawa couldn't do! LOLZ

Day 4 - Exchanging mobile email address. I never understand this concept since we call it as sms over here, and e-mail is meant for internets...Hmm, Japan's telecommunication system seems to be different from the rest of the world. Which is why many of their handphones are unusable outside the country

Day 5 - Aiko saw her ex making out with his new girlfriend. She suggested to go to a love hotel with Shirakawa, but he didn't. Finally we knew why Aiko is so agreeable with this omiai. She just want to shock her ex! Shirakawa is too good for her!

Day 6 - An email from Shirakawa, canceling the date because of work. He did not call

Day 7 - Still no contact from Shirakawa.

Day 8 - Nothing.

Day 9 - Email from Shirakawa, suggesting that they forget the whole marriage thing. Aiko replied his email with repeated "IDIOTS" lolz

Aiko appeared in front of Shirakawa's company building. He tried to explain that it's because she could not forget about her ex. Aiko replied that the reason why they broke up was over her refusal of sex with her ex. She did initially thought of using the "marriage" thing to shock him, but that she did not care about it any longer because it of Shirakawa. They made up for the "Day 6 - Day 9" misses and since it's Day 10 now, Aiko agrees to marry him.

I've always loved the way Miki Aihara-sensei draws, but her storyline (which consists of the dominant guy and the submissive girl) always annoys me. However, this oneshot is actually quite cute, since it's the guy who is the shy one instead. The girl Aiko is not my favourite kind of female character, but still, she's inside the range of "characters which I don't hate". And as usual, there's always the nice drawings to make up for the lack of character likeability.

Summary:

At the nearby Baek Hap Girls School, the jjang - Goo Yong Hwa - was extremely pissed off when she heard of Tae Hee do I sense a cat fight coming up? I just can't imagine Tae Hee in a cat fight though. Of course, we have the tradition of sending a gang of girls to ~~pull her hair~~ beat her up. But unlike tradition, Tae Hee is no ordinary girl. She was totally man-full when it comes to dealing with the girls come on! she refused to fight them because they're girls! Only a guy would say such stuff because they know they're stronger physically. Of course as usual, the girls was so awed that they're already half-worshiping their leader's enemy.

Tae Hee lost yet another bet with Sijun basketball game this time! Like I said a gazillion times already - Sijun is PERFECT. This time, the winner gets a date on Saturday! Naturally, Yoon Sul sense great danger here and decided to be the lightbulb. But no worries, Tae Hee's "stupidness" for the lack of a better word when it comes to Yoon Sul's feelings made him so angry that he ran off, leaving our couple alone YAY. Anyway, the date went well enough - no romanticism though - it was dinner at some noisy, smoky, smelly restaurant but real delicious food! You know the type... There, Sijun told Tae Hee that it was because she was so different than the usual girl that it attracted him hehehe, he uses sheeps as comparisons!After dinner, Sijun accompanies Tae Hee back, but on the way, met with some guys sent by an anonymous enemy?? who proceeded to attack him. Refusing Tae Hee's help, Sijun still manage beat up everyone without a sweat. His fighting style was so cool, that Tae Hee sort of "fell in love" developments!!!! That night she couldn't sleep, thinking of him fighting and her heart started thumping!

At school, Yoon Sul had a "man-to-man" talk with Sijun super funny! about Tae Hee. Later on back at home, Tae Hee admitted to Yoon Sul that she is attracted to Sijun. Of course, this prompted Yoon Sul to become the lightbulb again at their next date. Of course, this time, he didn't run away. The three went on to play billiards, in which the Baek Hap Girls watch on. Yong Hwa remember our lady jjang who is in love with Sijun? was shocked when she saw Tae Hee.

Hwan Sang's school's festival started - with the theme this year being cross-dressing. We get to see Yoon Sul's cosplaying as Card-captor Sakura, but why is Tae Hee dress as a woman??? LOLZ - Tae Hee's suppose to cross-dress as a guy, but since she's a guy in everyone's eyes, therefore, she has to cross-dress as a girl. Understand? But Tae Hee looks so gorgeous that it shocked everyone! And EVEN Sijun join in the action, looking just as beautiful as Tae Hee, until she did not even recognize him I didn't either!!!!

Okay - before I even say anything, this are the pics I'm sure you readers would like to see of our 3 main characters cross-dressing

Ok - what is it that I like about this volume? Was it because it was different than the normal "girl gets bullied because of her relationship with the most popular guy" scene? Or that we get to have so much eye-candy, especially in the last part where all of them cross dress? Or the fact that the mangaka (sorry to use this phrase since it's a manhwa, not a manga, but u get my meaning) is capable of drawing one of the cutest chibi's out of so many manga/manhwa that I've read? So far the only other chibi drawings which i really love is by Nakamura Yoshiki-sensei (Skip Beat) and Kazuya Minekura-sensei (Gensoumaden Saiyuki).

Skip Beat! Vol 17

Summary:

Reino suddenly appeared behind Kyouko, shocking her. But no, our Heroine was not scared, because now she has a powerful weapon with her, one favored by the gods themselves........Ren??? Lolz. Kyouko woke up (looking very cute, I might add) with Ren looking at her from below (remember our pillow lap session)....poor Kyouko...but lucky Ren (hehehe). Anyway, Kyouko confesses that eversince Ren came, he seems to give her confidence & courage which she lack to face the stalker. This made Ren soooo happy!!!! Meanwhile, the spy from Shou's group sent a message to the Beagles informing that he can no longer pass on anything to them. Later, Yashiro could sense that some "development" had happened with him & Kyouko. Although Ren sounded and look passive about it, somehow, he could not stop his building desires from his heart.

The day for Kyouko to finally return to Tokyo (how it rhymes!!) arrives. On her way to say goodbye to Director Ogata, she bumped into Shou's manager who vaguely inform her that Shou music is developing and that he will be a massive superstar. She even mentioned that she thinks this development is thanks to Kyouko (hint hint...hehehe), which Kyouko denied. After parting, who should appear next if not Reino? (Kyouko's bumping into everyone except the person she's suppose to be meeting!!)....A confrontation ensues and Ren came to the rescue!!!!! (again with the rhyming....what am I doing??) Touching Ren, Reino (who has ESP) could see his dark past, which was why Reino quickly backed off as he couldn't stand Ren's touch. Here we found out that "Tsuruga Ren" is just a stage name. After leaving, Kyouko suddenly froze, remembering Reino's words previously about how Corn would have died by now. She started crying, and Ren (who IS Corn) was so touched that he hugged her (and she allowed him to hug her!!!!!!!) and said that since Corn is a fairy prince, of course he would not be of this world and he's surely have grown to be a proper adult by now (how sweet..........). Elsewhere, Reino got a call, informing that the Beagles will be leaving for NY City.

Somewhere, Ren is "auditioning" for a movie role of a cold-blooded murderer. He was brilliant and was immediately invited to join the cast. Kyouko herself was talking to the director of her new drama series (her character's name is Natsu). He told her to not worry and just act like Mio. This does not please Kyouko at all. Further work offers from Sawara-san (since Sawara-san is something like her manager, any work offers for Kyouko will go through him) shows her that all the characters that are offered to her in the dramas are Mio-like role. This does not sit well with Kyouko at all (who dreams of acting in princesses roles!) because she does not want to get confined in a particular type of role and could not expand her skills.

When Kyouko discussed about her problem with Moko, she got support from her. However, Moko mentioned about Kyouko might lose. Not understanding, Kyouko ask what is she suppose to lose at? Flustered, Moko started talking nonsense before finally getting Kyouko distracted (by mentioning that she wishes to eat ice-cream with Kyouko like high school friends...lolz). Moko was relieved that Kyouko did not find out (something) about Fuwa Shou!
President Lory suddenly appear (in style, as usual) with work for the LoveMe section!

At DM set, Director Ogata came up to Ren looking very happy. It seems that the famous Japan actor, Kuu, will be coming back from America next month for some movie promotion. Kuu, whose former name Hozu Shuuhei (yup, the guy change his name for some god know reason) is the previous Katsuki in Tsukigomori. Back to Kyouko and Moko, it turns out that their LoveMe job this time is to take care of a SuperVIP! No prizes for guessing who that is!

Review:
I especially love the part where Kyouko woke up with Ren looking at her from her lap. Her reaction is soooooooo cute!!!!!!!! It's the 2nd time now Kyouko had a dream about Ren....hehehe

There's alot of unsolve mystery in this volume. The part where Reino & Ren touches, we get to see flashback to Ren's mysterious past. blood on his hand, my guess is that he murdered someone. Furthermore, Ren (in his audition as a killer) was really scary. He look so realistic and seems to be comfortable with using the gun. And the part where he seems shocked with the homecoming of Kuu, what is their relationship? How is the president involved in this matter? And why does he wants Kyouko to be involved as well? We'll see next volume!

Shuukatsu - Kimi ni Naitei Vol. 2 (END)

Summary:

Yuuri was fired up again and was looking around for a job, but many of the companies are not recruiting fresh graduates this time. Dissapointed, but still persevering, she bump into Manabe (this will DEFINITELY not be the only time!), and spontaneously, she asked him about his ex-girlfriend. His answer was quite honest and straight to the point (wow, quite different from the usual storyline where the guy give a vague answer or simply refuse to say anything) - "she was a normal girl, but he could not continue to be with her". Before saying anything else, Yuuri stop him (guess she couldn't bear to hear anymore).

After a short visit to Tokyo to visit an alumnus (that's a senior who has already graduated) for advice, another coincedence bump with Manabe in front of the convenience store (WHAT DID I SAY!!!). This time, Yuuri couldn't control herself and started crying. Manabe just hug her (which kinda shock Yuuri...LOLZ). She gave some excuse about crying because she's happy being praised by her senior, and Manabe walked her home.

Finally there is open positions in 2 publishing companies! Yuuri is quite determine to get a job this time (her look of determination quite surprises Manabe himself). After the interviews, Yuuri went looking for Manabe, and found him sleeping on a bench (wow, seems like for the first time it is NOT coincedence). Yuuri happily told Manabe that she passed the first round interview for both companies. Somehow, the situation turn quite serious, and Yuri actually confesses her love out loud! But Manabe just happened to be on the phone and did not hear her. A little relief, Yuuri ran off. But turns out that Manabe just pretend ignorance as he muttered to himselfm "I messed up". Yuuri crouched in front of a building crying a little when a beautiful lady asked if she's alright (a new character!!). Shiho Sakazaki, Manabe's ex-girlfriend is back!

Yuuri's friend warned her about Shiho's appearance because she might want to get back with Manabe. Meeting up with Shiho again in the university (Yuuri still doesn't realize it's HER), Yuuri chatted with her about graduating and job searching when Manabe appeared. They (Manabe & Shiho) greeted each other using their first names (showing their close relationship). Manabe informed her that the professor is looking for her. After she left, Yuuri, who's feeling insecure, started questioning him, but this time, Manabe told her to not get involve. Yuuri felt more and more how compatible they both were.

Meeting up with Shiho to return her handkerchief (which she borrowed before), Yuuri decided help Shiho meet up with Manabe. Hiding herself somewhere, Yuuri wonder if she just made the biggest mistake of her life when Manabe appeared and pinch her face! ......long story short, they ended up kissing and Manabe confessed his love for Yuuri!

Next day at lunch, Manabe announces that he don't plan to have a long distance relationship (that means Yuuri better get that job in Tokyo, or else!). At the 2nd interview with one of the companies, Yuri initially did very well, but at the final question, she did not answer with complete conviction. In the end, she did not receive the job invitation. Sensing her depression, Manabe went on a date with her the next day (she has one free day before her interview with the other company) which helps raised her spirits. In fact, she aced the interview with that company, and was offered a tentative employment.

On the day Yuuri left for Tokyo (for good this time!), Manabe surprised her by joining her in the train trip. As they kissed on the train, Manabe revealed that it wasn't the first time they kissed there! LOLZ

Review:

Ok, I think most of you guys know what I felt about the 2 main characters bumping into each other all the time, so I won't be harping on that again here (except to mention that there is at least 2 more times Manabe & Yuuri meet up coincedently but i did not include it in the summary...just can't bear to repeat the same thing over & over again!). That, in my opinion is the biggest flaw of this story. Thank goodness that after both of them finally got together as a couple, it no longer happens. I think the mangaka wanted many encounters between them but do not know how to get them to meet - and in the end just keep bumping them together!

However, I do like how the story ended with both of them on the train again, this time heading for Tokyo with a clear future ahead. It is in contrast with the beginning where Yuuri went back from Tokyo in failure. Very nice! And it is cute the way Yuuri is happy with her job work eventhough it is hard work. This shows passion. I could only wish that I could be like that. Somehow, I know that what I am currently studying is not my greatest passion at all, and sometimes I really worry that I will end up regretting.

Anyway, it is a nice manga which I will re-read again.

Shuukatsu - Kimi ni Naitei Vol. 1

Summary:

Asaoka Yuuri is a final year university student in Tokyo searching for a job. However, at the interview, she flustered and got all nervous, especially because there is another confident interviewee, a guy named Manabe in her group. It was her 49th consecutive loss (as in failure in interviews)!

Dissapointed, Yuuri bought an unreserved seat (refer to notes below) for the train back to Kyoto (where her university is). And Manabe just happened to be in the same train! In a reserve seat no less. Unfortunately, Yuuri was not able to grab a seat in the train and fainted while standing. When she woke up, she realizes that she is seating next to Manabe. They chatted a little about her failure in interviews Manabe gave her some small advice about control & to not be so straightforward all the time before departing from the train station.

Back at the university, they bumped into each other again, and realizes that they're in the same university. However, the ever shy Yuuri pretended not to recognize Manabe eventhough he greeted her. Later on, Yuuri got some gossip information from her good friend about Manabe. It seems that he is actually a law student who actually does not need to go job searching. Manabe & Yuuri met again at the cafeteria, and this time Yuuri does not ignore him. Manabe even gave more advice to Yuuri regarding job searching & interviews, but it only got Yuuri depress because his advices cut to all her weakness. However, when she met him again while jogging (wow, how many times can they bump into each other within 1 week but not have met before this!), Yuuri got back her spirits again and even decided to go to Tokyo again for another interview. And it just so happen that Manabe is doing the same (although it is different companies this time)!

Yuuri failed yet again, and was crying her heart out (poor girl) in the middle of a heavy downpour when Manabe came to her. They took the train back to Kyoto again but the typhoon caused it to be postponed. unable to stand the humidity inside the train, both of them left and stayed in a hotel. (hehehe, no cheeky things happened eventhough they slept in the same room.)

The next day on the train, Yuuri was so exhausted that she fell asleep next to Manabe. And....he kissed her...Back at the university, they got friendlier with each other (who wouldn't after such a trip?) and even played badminton! Manabe explain the reason why he went for all those interviews is because he wanted to explore more possibilities for the future. That night, looking at her beloved books (seems like Yuuri likes reading storybooks), she realizes what Manabe's advice means when he said "what you're searching for can only be found within you".

The next day, Yuuri overheard a Manabe rejecting a girl's confession, saying that he don't feel like dating anyone, and she knew in her heart that she could not confess her feelings to him. Instead, she told him that she will continue to persevere in her efforts to find a career and hopes that as a friend, he will pray for her success.

Review:

I know, I know, from the summary, this sounds like a boring manga. But it's not! Classified under josei, it's a story of how a student makes the transit into the working world. Of course, there is the romance between the 2 leads as well. But what makes this manga a success is mostly because of the interactions between them. Most of Manabe's advices to Yuuri makes a lot of sense (although them bumping into each other all the time is too much of a coincedence).

This manga is very realistic in its potrayal of the struggles to find a job and start a good career, especially in the competitive Japan. There are plenty of capable and qualified people who are vying for limited positions. It's a kill or be killed kind of environment. Yuuri is potrayed as one of the more struggling students who lack the capabilities to perform well in interviews whereas Manabe is the complete opposite. In this volume, we can see that Manabe gave continuous advice to her, which helps her grow and develop and to be more confident.

The drawing is pleasant to look at, and the conversations are interesting especially to a university student who is graduating as well like me. I think this is one of the reason why I like it so much, because it is in parallels with my current situation. I wouldn't recommend this to younger teenagers readers who does not have much interest in job seeking and career stories. But this is a nice read if you're between 17 - 25 years old.

Notes:
For the trains in Japan, you can buy either unreserve or reserve tickets. For unreserved tickets, you have to fight with others to get seats, and if you don't, it means standing all the way to your destination.

I am a Piano

Review:

The summary is simply as told in the title - A story of a piano, drawn & told in a very unique way. Only 8 pages long, but it manages to convey much. Instead of the usual black & white, the drawings have 2 additional colours - yellow & red. It's definitely one of a kind manga.

I would recommend it to everyone! Just take 1 minute to read and you definitely would want to keep this in your collection of oneshots.

Skip Beat! Vol 16

Summary:

Big confrontation at the door of Ren's room! Although it was Momose who was searching for Kyouko, Shou tag along as well. And he revealed all about the stalking & how he saved Kyouko! Ren got SOOOOOOOOOOOO MAD!!! In fact, he was so shocked that he asked all of them, including poor Kyouko, to leave him alone for a while. Kyouko who never saw him this angry before kept thinking that it's her fault for not telling Ren sooner. Back in his own room, Shou got worried as well because he did not expect this reaction from Ren. Shou realized that Ren really likes Kyouko, and not just as a senpai-kouhai relationship.

Next morning, Ren bumped into Kyouko & Momose. Kyouko profusedly apologized to Ren for what happened, but Ren with a smile, told her to avoid speaking to him from now onwards! Thank goodness it just a dream!!! (I really thought it might be real...haizzzzzzzzz). But the dream really got her depress....and so she decided to take a morning walk at the forest nearby. Guess who should she met, if not Ren himself!

Ren, who regretted his reaction the night before is worried that Kyouko would now be to afraid of him, while Kyouko was still thinking of the dream! It was one awkward meeting between our 2 leads. However, Kyouko again gather up courage to talk and apologize to Ren. She explained everything that happened and things seems to be back normal for now. They both return back to the hotel.

Ren had breakfast with Yashiro in the room & decided to walk down the stairs (instead of taking the lift) as exercise, but on his way, he overheard a confrontation between Kyouko & Shou!!! Shou seems to be on the verge of confessing to Kyouko that he still loves her, when Ren decides to intervene. Here again, Shou not only could see that Ren really likes Kyouko, but that Kyouko didn't realize his feelings!

Ren gave an excuse of not having breakfast yet to get Kyouko out of there, which means he had 2 breakfast that day! For Ren who can't eat much, this means indigestion problems! LOLZ.....In fact, Ren got so sick that he decided to skip lunch and rest. A naughty Yashiro decided to tell a guilty Kyouko (because she thought it was because she made him eat too much) to go comfort Ren in the bus.

Some really cute conversation between Kyouko&Ren, and it ended with a lap pillow!!!! Oo la la@#&$^* Kyouko's lap as Ren's pillow ~ he's so lucky ne?? And some very vague flashback of Ren's dark past is shown again here....something to do with murder??? Hmmm....

Meanwhile, we can see politics between Shou & the Beagles. Shou decided to leak some stupid pig song as well as a remake of the Beagle's own song to them, taunting them & showing that he realizes that they're stealing his songs. Shou decided to take things into his own hands, and confiscated all media devices so to prevent any further leaking! The legendary era of Shou begins?

Review:

Wow, eversince Ren realizes his own feelings of Kyouko, he is revealing more & more of it in front of everyone! But the blur Kyouko will definitely be the last one to see it, eventhough like the previous volume, Kyouko has, in a way, become dependant on Ren - she was so afraid that his anger will ultimately push her away from him (like in the dream). To Kyouko, an angry Ren who still speaks to her is better than a Ren who does not want to acknowledge her presence.

Here, we (i mean me, at least) finally see Shou in some positive light, especially in his fight with the Beagles. But I still hate this guy!

Vanilla Ice Vol.2

Synopsis:
Tae Hee & Yoon Sul quarreled all the way back home, but she doesn't understand why he was mad. In her mind, it is alright if she joins the fight club, but it's not alright for him. Flashbacks to when both of them were kids & how they met for the first time (same situation - Yoon Sul gets bullied, and she saves him), him thinking she was a guy only to find out that his saviour is a girl! And when they're older and she kissed him because of a bet with her brothers. Back to present times, Yoon Sul realize that Tae Hee haven't change at all since they were kids, and if there is to be any progress (romantically, i guess), it'll have to be him that change.

At school, the guys all started to call Tae Hee "Nunim" (since she's the current top fighter of her year, therefore she's kind of the jjang for her year). Tae Hee went to find Sijun for an explanation and his answer was that he is interested in her (ooooo, this guy is SO COOL!!!!). After school at the fight club, the initiation ceremony (more like a celebration of the addition of members) started. Sijun showed plenty of "interest" towards Tae Hee, and even ask Yoon Sul if it's alright for him to take Tae Hee!

The next day, Tae Hee had another private conversation with Sijun (I can't wait for more of these moments!). Sijun directly ask her why does she not become his (is he cool or what!!!!!!!), which shocked Tae Hee into oblivion. She refused to believe that he likes her and they ended up in a bet. If she can beat him in 10 minutes, she can do whatever she wants and Yoon Sul can leave the club. This girl just wants a fight...hehehe....Anyway, long story short, she not only loses, Sijun even managed to teased her (her whole face turns lobster red!). Of course, that triggered a straight punch at Sijun. Although his "injured" face caused an uproar in the entire school, but Sijun was completely cool about it. In fact, he seems quite happy with his current situation with Tae Hee, so much so that he even told Yoon Sul that they're dating.

Poor Yoon Sul was so mad that he actually shouted to her in front of all the students, which of course caused yet a bigger uproar. When Tae Hee confronted Sijun at the cafeteria, he publicly announced to his friends that she is the girl he likes!

All the girls who went to find Tae Hee couldn't believe it's true since she exudes such "male" charisma that they find themselves in a half crush for her instead. Of course, when confronted, Sijun again confirmed that she is his type! Although everyone can't imagine her as a girl, Sijun thinks of her as slender & cute!

Yoon Sul told Tae Hee that he is against this relationship, but she missunderstood his meaning and thought that Yoon Sul likes Sijun as well and he was jealous of her! Poor Yoon Sul....

Review:
I am sooooooooooooo in love with Sijun. He is incredibly cool and a perfect match with Tae Hee! (How many times have I said it in this post?) Although I am sorry for Yoon Sul, but I'm totally rooting for Sijun.

Another single volume manga. Only 3 chapters.

Summary:

Introducing class representative, Inukai Jun!! Cool, handsome, popular, with the name Inukai - literal translation is pet dog! Nice name huh. Which was why our leading lady Daizawa Riku took notice of him. She has a madness for dogs. So much so that she doesn't bother about boyfriends and stuff like that (Nice change from the typical shoujo oneshot mangas).

On her way to school one morning, she got caught up with a cute dog again (poor dog, being squeezed to death by her!) and was late. No worries. Back gate! Jump over the fence! Right into Inukai's arms! Naturally, our lovely girl was not embarrassed or anything - because she smelled dog on Inukai!!!! After pleading, she got access to his house, to meet his dogs! Of course, Inukai just thought that the dogs are an excuse for her to "chase" him. Riku has no such thoughts (oh, innocent girl). She really just wanted to meet the dogs. And we have 3 of them! Ocean, Sky, Woody - good names!!!!! Riku's love for dogs attracted Inukai, who is a dog lover himself.....dam di di dum....we have a kiss! Inukai is one fast mover.

Back in school, Riku confided everything to her best friend. The poor girl doesn't know what to think of The Kiss. What to do? Go confirm with Inukai of course! But dear Riku got a bad shock. Inukai has seemingly left after getting a text from his girlfriend!! Riku ran and caught up with Inukai. Is he going to meet his girlfriend? "Yes, I'll bring you along to introduce you." Stupid Inukai. Can't you see our pitiful dog girl is crying in the inside?

Wow - the girl Yuri is cute! How can Riku compare? The tears came out for real this time. Nice Yuri whoosh her away to see -----puppies??? Oh, they're Woody's kids! The mother is Lily - Yuri's dog. She's the one Inukai was referring to as girlfriend (what is it with manga's characters being obscured with their words? be more straightforward next time! Ooops, I forgot, we need these misunderstandings or else there won't be a story to tell). Yuri's just a cousin of Inukai, and yes, he is in love with Riku.

Riku visits Inukai's house everyday now - but it's poor Inukai this time. Riku kept playing with the dogs, that he felt overlooked. What does he do? Take off his shirt & show some skin!! Haha, they're just gonna play in the sea and do some smooching (don't worry - this is not an X-rated manga...hahaha). In the meantime, Woody escapes from the gate (which was left open by Riku....but don't worry, this reviewer love you enough and she doesn't blame you!).

Oh.....here comes the bad guy! Riku's ex-boyfriend whose name Inui also contains the word dog (Inu) but is a dog hater!! Which was why Riku broke up with him (Good reason!). Anyway, he saw Woody, and ......a kick! Woody's on the ground. Riku rushed up in time. Another kick to the dog! Nope - it misses because Inukai is here to save the day!!!

Woody wasn't injured because the smart alec pretended to be asleep/fainted after the first kick. Everything's well. Inukai brought Riku one of Woody's kids for her....and her name is Land!!!! Another pun since Riku's name can be translated literally as Land (same pronounciation). And they live happily (ever after???).

Review:

This is such a cute manga!!!! Really one of my favourite oneshot. They love dogs, I love dogs. And all of them has such cute names! Not only the dogs, but our 2 lead characters as well - Pet Dog & Land.

Really recommend it to all for a nice short read. This one is a keeper.

Ashita no Ousama Vol.2

Synopsis:

Maki who came to Yuu's apartment looking for her, caught Touya coming out out nonchalantly. Yuu who went over to Garandou saw the stranger (the girl at Touya's house the day before) talking to Shougo, trying to persuade him to make Touya give up theatre & be a TV actor (a celebrity) instead. The stranger is actually Kina, a famous model. An old girlfriend of Touya??

Meanwhile, Shougo gave Yuu a task to do - turn a rough plot into a full script. However, after a couple of tries, Shougo discarded her work, and told her to redo it. Finally, he told the actors to act it out and let Yuu see her mistakes in her scripts. The words she wrote does not flow as well as she has imagined. Not giving up, Yuu, re-writes the script again, this time with Touya's help (who came over to Garandou for a visit). In the end, Shougo consider the script as a PASS. He then told Yuu to direct it!!! At the same time, Touya is set to be appearing in a TV drama (seems like Kina got her way after all). At the same time, Garandou's lead actress Misore, is set to go to New York, meaning that Yuu does not have a lead for her production! Although after pulling in (loaning) actresses from other companies, Yuu is dissatisfied with all of them. One day in the university campus, she caught sight of a student - and asked her to act in her play! The girl, Ohara finally agrees, after much persuading, and rehearsal went on. Yuu's first play was a moderate success!

Touya got more & more popular as his TV shows aired. Many reporters wanted to dig for gossips about him. Although Kina was adamant that Touya leave the stageworld and concentrate on TV & films, Touya misses the theatre. He promised that he will act in the play which Yuu writes for him in the future - The Age-changing Mountain Pass.

A message left on Touya's phone by Yuu was deleted by Kina. Yuu continues to try to write the script for Touya's play, although it is not progressing well. At the same time, Ohara met Misore (who came back from New York) for the first time, and realizes that she have a huge rival in front of her. Touya and Yuu met & talked about their insecurities - Touya in his acting, & Yuu with her script.

The rivalry between Ohara & Misore heated up for the new play, The Dinasour Bones. Being the lead actress in the company, Misore kept bullying Ohara, however this only serves to fire Ohara's spirit and improved her acting as the rivalry goes on. Yuu on the sidelines saw this as a positive action by Misore. She realizes that talent can't only be nurtured with sweet words. On a trip to the TV station, Yuu met Touya who seems to have lost interest in stage plays (he always like to go watch Garandou's plays, but brushes it off this time). 1 week before the debut, Shougo decided to leave all directing to Yuu! And Kina suddenly became Touya's manager! Although displeased that she gave up her modelling career for it, Touya had to just accept the fact.

The Garandou play was a resounding success as usual. Touya did not come. after the play, Yuu overheard an argument between Misore & Shougo. Turns out that Misore was angry at Shougo for pushing her away from Garandou. But Shougo just did not want to stunt Misore's growth as an actress. A talk with Shougo later on leads to a question for Yuu - does she love Touya?

Review:

Wow....this is one of the hardest synopsis I have to write among all the mangas. I wonder why....

The thing about this manga is that there are moments of brilliance, but at other times, it is quite boring. The only character that attracts me are Yuu, Touya, and sometimes - Shougo. All the side characters are incredibly boring. In fact, I can't even remember any of their names and had t0 refer back to the manga while writing this synopsis.

I like it enough to continue updating myself with the release of the scanlations, but do I really really like it as much as other mangas like Glass Mask, Ouran, Skip Beat etc? Not even close.....if I have to rate it, I'll say barely above average.

Vanilla Ice Vol.1

Synopsis:

In a town known for its delinquents, a fight was going on at the park. 8 vs 1, but the lone person manages to “exterminate” the opposition. A very handsome fellow, fights with grace and lethal moves. The scene cuts in on a very cute person sitting on the ground. A princess saved! What a fairytale!

Cool fighter Taehee & weak princess Yoon Sul have been neighbours for 12 years. And because of Yoon Sul’s beauty that always attracts troublemakers, Taehee had to “take care” of things. It was their first they at Hwan Sang school (both families just moved in), and both students attracted plenty of attention due to their incredible looks (also because they were both wearing normal clothes instead of uniform). The incredible revelation was revealed the next day, when Yoon Sul came into class wearing a boy’s uniform and Taehee a girl’s uniform!!!! The greatest shock in history to all students (and readers of the manhwa alike).

Yoon Sul’s body has always been weak (he’s asthmatic). Therefore, he was always saved by Taehee. She considers it her job to take care of him. However, what Taehee doesn’t understand is that Yoon Sul wants to be a man (meaning he wants to be strong and manly). Taehee’s entire family are private bodyguards (they all look so cool!!!!) whereas Yoon Sul’s father is a manhwa artist!

During a basketball game, Yoon Sul fainted, and Taehee (the everlasting prince charming) carried him to the school clinic. There, she met a handsome student smoking without care who told her that the nurse isn’t there. Later in class, Yoon Sul came back looking fine & annoyed. A fierce looking guy came looking for him, and confessed that he likes him! A punch from Yoon Sul was the automatic reaction. Turns out that the guy was the first year Jjang and the story that Yoon Sul got him down with a single punch spread all over the school. At the school assembly, Taehee found out that the smoker (from the clinic) was actually the student representative, Hwang SiJun. A perfect guy in both sports and academic, he was the living legend of Hwan Sang high.

All sports clubs are vying to get Taehee as member. The same for Yoon Sul for the artistic clubs. The first year Jjang (the one who confessed) also asked Yoon Sul if he is interested in joining “Hwan Sang Universe” (which is actually a club where gangsters are members). Initially declining, Yoon Sul eventually for fired up to join when he heard that only the strongest can join.

Back at Taehee house, we get to see her parents (both so so cool). Turns out that Taehee’s mom is 4 years older than her dad. Anyway, Taehee was ordered to go buy cigarettes. On her way back, she saw Hwang Sijun getting threaten by a couple of delinquents. Wanting to help, but the smoker quickly demolished the delinquents before she could step in. His fighting skills are incredible. After recognizing her, he “stole” her cigarettes & thanked her for it!

The next day, Taehee found out about Yoon Sul joining a “fight club” and went to rescue him! She completely beat up all the other members when Sijun (the smoker student representative cum good fighter) appeared. Turns out that he’s the leader of the club (or gang, if you wanna call it that way..hehehe) as well as the school’s Jjang! (Man, is there anything this guy can’t do?). Ignoring him, Taehee started pulling Yoon Sul out. Sijun laughed and allowed Yoon Sul to leave the club, on 1 condition – that Taehee has to replace him!

Review:
First time doing a manhwa review. And I’ve used so many exclamation marks in my summary. This manhwa is definitely full of surprises and twists. I love it!!!!!
Would just like to warn that this manga is currently on hiatus. It is only up till volume 4. It’s really sad if it is discontinued. The storyline is very very nice. And the drawings are above average. What I like most regarding the drawing is that it is not complex at all. I know manhwa artists tends to draw complex & intricate scenes (imagine Goong & Bride of the Water God) – although they’re beautiful, there’s just too much too look at. Therefore, I prefer the minimalist approach of Vanilla Ice.

Now to the characters: Taehee is just incredibly…incredible…no other words to describe. She’s cool, and confident! She doesn’t mind that other people see her as an ogre lady who’s so strong and manly. After all, her very very cool father fell in love with her mother (who’s also a strong). Yoon Sul on the other hand, is extremely dissatisfied with his looks. He gets angry everytime people treat him as a princess. It is quite clear that he likes Taehee (although he’s denying it) and hates it that he has to be protected by her all the time. Sijun – another incredible character. Like Taehee, he is cool, strong, with a “don’t care if you caught me smoking or fighting” attitude. But at the same time, he is the student representative as well as the school’s Jjang! I definitely love if there will be a development between him & Taehee. I like him more that Yoon Sul, mainly because he is confident with himself.

Taehee’s family appears quite frequently – we get to see her brothers (she’s the only daughter) as well as parents. Her family are all good looking and strong as well. No wonder she turns out to be such a good fighter. While Yoon Sul’s father treats him like his princess daughter. Now we can see how much family environment influence us!

Skip Beat Vol. 15

Synopsis:

Kyouko decided to take a bath (Japanese have public baths, especially at tourist hotels) and bump into Shouko (Shou's manager). They discussed about Shou's problems, where a spy in the group keep stealing his works to pass it on to the Beagles. Outside of the bath, Shou was waiting impatiently for Shouko, when the Beagle's themselves pass by. Of course, true to shoujo manga, Kyouko just have to walk out from the bath at this time. It's a 3-way showdown!! Reino (Yes! I finally got his name!), the leader shows great interest in "capturing" Kyouko!

Back in her room with Momose, Kyouko felt great fear, as she is reminded by the scene where Reino touch her. Momose told her that her phone had been ringing previously. It was Ren. Kyouko called back unconciously, and although she did not reveal her fear, Ren could felt that something is wrong.

The next day, Shou suddenly appeared to stay next to Kyouko (seems like you can be a good guy too, eh Shou!) throughout breakfast, only leaving when Kyouko prepares for her shooting. Momose got curious and wonders if they're a couple. Elsewhere, a co-worker of Ren commented that he has been working non-stop without any breaks. Ren suspected something wrong and has arrange his schedule so that he can go off to his main work (Dark Moon) sooner.

Later on, Kyouko (in full Mio getup) came looking for Shou (who's been missing since breakfast), scolding him for leaving his work behind. Shou said that he's just working on a new song (ah, someone's taking precautions to not let the Beagle's steal his stuff) and warns her to not simply leave her film unit and wander around by herself.

Both of them parted ways, and Shou walk back with his crew, when one of them mentioned that they saw Reino. Back at the film unit, a DM crew inform Kyouko that she has a visitor, which turns out to be non other than Reino! She quickly escapes to the nearby woods but Reino was able to follow her. Reino admitted to stealing Shou's songs and the only reason why he is doing all this stuff (stalking, stealing, copying etc) is because it is fun to see the look on Shou's face. This angered Kyouko! She can't forgive Shou! Yep, that's right. She can't forgive him for losing to such rotten musicians such as Beagles. She announced that the only one to defeat Shou would be her. At this moment, Shou manages to find them and overhears what Kyouko said.

Reino than announce that he will now stop harrasing Shou, and instead, concentrate on her. He asks if he did much worse things than Shou to her, would she put all her anger on him instead? At this point, Shou steps in and stops Reino. Director Ogata arrives as well. Reino then threatened that if this news gets out, Kyouko's image would be stained. Kyouko agrees that "Mio's image would be stained" (get it? Kyouko is worried about Mio, not Kyouko herself) and therefore decided to keep this in wraps. Reino started to walk off and said that "it is better for me to publicise this, since it would make her think of me" (does all the guys in the world think that anger & hatred = love????)

Back at DM film unit, Yashiro has arrived and announced that Ren would be coming himself the next day, much to everyone surprise. Turns out that no matter how Ren tries, he couldn't finish his work in 1 day, and had pleaded Yashiro to come to Karuizawa first so that he can check out the situation. Ren is very sure that something is going on.

Back in the woods, Shou went after Reino & they continued fighting over who will get Kyouko (stupid guys!). Both thinks that with Kyouko's amount of anger and malice, the guy she hates the most will be the one to fill up all her heart (with anger, not love), but she will still be "his" (the one to obtain her). MCP!!!! Why do guys think that girls are objects to be obtain?

The entire DM cast had done no progress on the shooting because of Kyouko's condition. As agreed by all, Kyouko's stalker would not be revealed for security purposes. A van was prepared for those who are going back to the hotel (which just so happens to be all girls, since the actors had gone drinking, the the crew had more work to do). This made Kyouko very worried, but one sentence from Director Ogata put all her fears to rest, "It'll be ok for you to go back, because for sure the whole time he will be with you."

Back in front of the hotel room, Kyouko smile at a man at the door, Ren.

They started chatting in the room (with Yashiro as well, of course...hehehe). Of course, the discussion turn serious, and Kyouko was on the brink of revealing everything, when Shou have to come knocking!!!! Baka-Shou!

Review:

Wow....no acting done here in this volume, but plenty of character development. We finally got to see Shou worrying over Kyouko, but men are just so chavunistic! Look at both Shou and Reino! It's a good thing Ren is not part of these MCP gang!

Poor Kyouko. I'm sure she is glad to see Ren. I know I will. This scene which shows her relief at his appearance is very much significant. It is the sense of security that he has given her, whether she realizes it or not, and for a relationship, it is a big progress, as compared to previously when she couldn't stand him. Ren is also very clear in his feelings (at least in front of Yashiro, whereby he couldn't stop himself from trying to reach out and help Kyouko eventhough is he far away.

Diamond Head Vol. 3

Summary:

A fight broke out between 2 classmates and it was requested that the judiciary club take care of things. The plaintiff Hase Mamoru was punched by Ishigami Yuuji after insulting him and his handicapped brother. Ishigami was pronounced guilty by Leica with the reasoning that revenge can never be an excuse for justice. In anger, Ishigami tried to stab Leica with a knife, but did not succeed because Setsu intervened and got hurt instead. Hase who was standing by the bylines continued to insult Ishigami, but angered Leica who himself gave Hase another punch! After court was adjourned, Setsu was told to go the hospital but refused. Mizuki (the girl who had a crushed on Setsu but was refused) whispered to him that her family owns a private hospital and he can go there if he wants to, since they will keep any medical records secret. Setsu agreed and went off with her.

For the next case, Nanao was chosen to defend a girl who was accused of stalking this guy (the girl just has a crush on him that went to an extreme case). Nanao has a personal link to this case as she felt that the girl’s problem mirrors her own, since Nanao is in love with Leica and also always watch him. The case ended with her loss in the case. This made Nanao mad at Leica for judging thus, because she felt he couldn’t understand her feelings (or the feelings of a girl in love).

The club got even busier as well as popular. Leica always refused to join in the group’s discussion and went off early, giving excuses that he has things to do. He was then shown buying a music box. Setsu, who looks a little sick, also left together with Mizuki, much to Nanao’s surprise. The rest of the gang went off to Kirihiko’s house to discuss their cases. There, Nanao found an old photo of Leica and a girl who looks like his sister, but it turns out to be his girlfriend from 4 years ago. But it seems that they are “still together” eventhough she is no longer attending Mehabia High. Katsuma asked mysteriously whether Nanao wishes to know where that girl is now. Leica walk into a hospital room. The girl from the photo was lying on the bed, unconscious. Today is her birthday and the music box was his present to her. Elsewhere, Mizuki got up from the bed to put on her clothes while some music played on the background. She asked Setsu who was still lying in the bed what song it is. He just replied “Today is her birthday”. Leica hugging the girl, said, “Everyday I pray to live with Reika, and to die with Reika.” That night, while walking Nanao home, Katsuma warns her that Leica would never love anybody else again, and that she should just give up on him.

The student president, jealous of the judiciary club’s popularity decided to sue Leica for being an unsuitable judge. Leica accepted the lawsuit and said that he doesn’t care whether he wins or loses. This made Nanao mad, and she demands an explanation. The only reasons Leica became a judge was because Kirihiko asked him to, and also because “she” wanted to be a judge.

Review:

Hmm, quite a lot of mysteries regarding Setsu and also Leica. Nothing much was revealed here. In my opinion, Nanao quite failed for her first time defending the stalker girl. She allows her own personal feelings to interfere with her job. Leica was quite right in his verdict for that case.

The case with Leica & Reika is quite creepy, especially with how they resemble each other. This reminds me of what my friend had previously mentioned: couples will look and act more like each other the longer they’re together. I wonder if this is the case for all couples?? Hmm... something to ponder on.

Skip Beat Vol. 14

Summary:

During lunch, Kyouko & Director Ogata discussed about what happened previously. It seems that Momose was very frustrated with the fact that the ad-lib scene (refer previous volume) was completely dominated by Ren. Momose herself was way behind him in terms of acting skills and ability. Kyouko could relate to that because she had felt the same way when she first work with Ren as well.The scene shifts to Ren looking very sexy while playing the piano (seems like his character Katsuki plays the piano in the story) for the reporters as part of an interview. After it, he chatted with Yashiro who teased him about Kyouko and prospective guys. In Ren’s mind, only 1 guy matters: Shou!!!

Kyouko was invited to appear in Japonet Scoop, a entertainment program covering the ranking of Japan artists, as well as featuring up & coming new artists. While waiting for her turn, she realizes that Shou might be there as well. A knock on her door reveals a handsome guy wearing gothic clothes. He asked if she was the “Kyouko who starred in Fuwa Shou PV” girl, and sneered at her, saying “it can’t be”. Meanwhile, elsewhere, Ren & Yashiro overheard some girls gossiping about how they were deceived because the real Kyouko isn’t all like the “Fuwa Shou PV Kyouko”. And the girls have found a new target to idolize over: Vie Ghoul.

It turns out that the guy who sneered at Kyouko is part of the Vie Ghoul band, whom Kyouko infamously thought & mispronounced as Beagle (a dog!!!). The band has overtook Shou in the rankings, but Kyouko realizes that they’re just copy cats (copying Shou’s music and patterns). After the programme, they insulted both Kyouko and Shou. Angrily, Kyouko went to find Shou for a “chat”. After calling him a coward for losing to copycats, Shou got mad and slapped Kyouko, thus scarring her face (unintentionally I would say…but still unforgivable!!!! Go Die!!!!). Kyouko demons made their appearances. Outside the room, the Vie Ghoul members are eavesdropping. Surprisingly, the leader guy (the one who snubbed Kyouko. What is his name?? I need a name!!) is able to see and capture on of the Kyouko demons. It is the first time this guy is interested in someone!

Back to Ren and Yashiro, the latter actually got hold of a copy of the Fuwa Shou’s PV – and tempted Ren with it. Although Ren appeared uninterested, but actually….hehehee….Ren got even more worried about Shou.

The next day at the company, Ren bump into Kyouko, and both of them went to the DM set together. Who should be waiting there, if not Shou himself! He wanted to talk to Kyouko alone, and to apologize. He even brought along some cream (for the scar). Although appearing unconcern, Ren was actually trying to control himself from breaking out.

That night, Kyouko was packing her bags, preparing for the on-location shooting of DM at Karuizawa when she received a call from Ren. Since Ren will be going later compare to Kyokou and the cast, he gave her advice about controlling herself (since this is a first time for Kyouko), Ren was actually watching Shou’s PV at the same time, and looking very very serious, as the beautiful face of angel Kyouko appears on the TV screen.

Karuizawa is a famous place for entertainers, and in the world of manga/anime, there’s no such thing as coincidence! Not only were DM casts there, Shou’s there as well as the Beagle band!!!! (I decided that Beagle is a much better name than Vie Ghoul). The only one missing now is Ren, who is modeling for some jewelry brand. He gets more and more concern about Kyouko (impending sense of doom?? Ren is very perceptive!!). Kyouko on the other hand, scolded Shou for losing to the Beagles. After hearing her call them by a dogs name, Shou got so tickled that he lost the sense defeat that he felt earlier on. He realizes that just by being with Kyouko for that short while, she manages to help make him laugh and release his tension (oh no….Shou’s definitely wanting to keep Kyouko for himself!!). gaining his confidence back, Shou vows to beat the clones!

Review:

Hmm…maybe it is because Vol. 13 was too good? Or that Vol. 14 doesn’t have much action going on?? Or maybe I just don’t like Shou?....This volume is alright, but not too spectacular. I like for a fact that Ren is getting worried that Kyouko might be snatch away by Shou, and Shou finally realizes how good Kyouko is. But the thing I enjoy most would be Yashiro’s antics in trying to get Ren to admit his feelings! He’s such a good character for laughs!

Next volume: Kyouko gets kidnapped!

I know what I am going to say here has nothing to do with manga or anime whatsoever, but I can see from the hit counter that there are people who does come into this blog with the purpose to read my summaries or maybe just linked here by accident. Therefore I would want to take this opportunity to voice out to all of you regarding an issue close to my heart, and yours too, because we're all a part of it - Earth & its occupants.

I'm sure all of you are aware about the environmental problems we're facing now. Although as an individual, some of you might think that there's nothing much you can do, but that is ABSOLUTELY WRONG. It is through the joint forces of many individuals that we're able to take actions to rectify the problems that we, as humans, have created in the first place.

Ashita no Ousama Vol. 1

Synopsis:

Sasaya Yuu, a college girl who had just moved to Tokyo recently from the countryside, finally watch her first stage play. She was entranced by it, especially by one of the characters and decided then & there to be an actress! However, because of her country girl ways (tying 2 pigtails, wearing boring clothes, and even writing every single expenses she made into a notebook!), she was laughed off by her friends. One of them has connection to a stage troupe company and decided to bring her there for a tour and to show to her the reality. Not just anybody can be an actor!

Yuu was naturally denied by the company. However, she was steadfast in her pursuit and gave an impressive speech about how she will not give up. She was overheard by one of the actors there who praised her speech. Yuu realizes that the actor, Ichii Touya, was the same man who had entranced her in the play she watched earlier on. Touya was shocked that she recognizes him, and requested for her to keep silent regarding this matter because he was not suppose to be acting in another troupe’s play. In return, he gave her a contact of another company troupe (Garandou Company) that is currently searching for actresses.

The next day at Garandou, Shimamura Shougo (the head) gave Yuu a chance because she was after all recommended by Touya. However, Yuu couldn’t act at all. She was so bad, she was worse than an amateur. But she gave another impressive speech about her will to be an actress and Shougou decided to allow her to stay. The next day, Yuu was already helping out with the costumes while watching the troupe rehearse. They were having problems with the script, but during a small talk with Shougo, Yuu unawarely gave him a great idea. When Touya later came over to look at the rehearsals, Shougou told him that he don’t understand why he kept Yuu eventhough she is useless as an actress.

The play was very successful. After the curtain closes, Yuu and Shougo discussed about it, whereby Yuu tried to reenact her favourite scene. She showed great understanding about the script but still couldn’t act it out. Shougo later brought Yuu to watch Touya rehearse. Yuu felt very envy of Touya who is so talented eventhough he is still a rookie actor. Shougo also explained to Yuu the role of the play director and how each director has his own style & direction.

Later, an acquaintance of Yuu asked her to be a stand in for a play because they’re short of actresses. They thought that since she is from Garandou, she wouldn’t be bad. But during opening night, Yuu not only made a big mistake, but even fell down in front of the audience. Luckily, the mistake was covered by another actress. But this experience made Yuu think that she is not suitable for acting no matter how hard she tries. She went to discuss this with Shougo, but ended up talking to Touya (who happens to be there) instead. Both of them also overheard Shougo saying that Yuu is his rival. Angrily Yuu announce that she is leaving the troupe and stomped off. Both Touya & Shougo agreed that Yuu would definitely be back.

Yuu went back to her old routine, but she misses the theatre world. She went and watch Touya’s play and met him by accident after that. He persuaded her to return to the troupe. After thinking over their conversation, Yuu realizes that eventhough she can’t be an actress, she could still work backstage and be a part of making a play. She decided to go back to Garandou. When Yuu went to Touya’s apartment to thank him for his help, a beautiful stranger slams the door on her. But luckily, she met Touya who fetch her home and even fell asleep there.

Review:

Wow, I manage to squeeze one last review for the month of March.

What is it about manga with the entertainment industry as is backdrop theme that attracts me so? I’ve been addicted to series like Glass Mask, Skip Beat!, Penguin Revolution, etc. But this series is different in one sense. The main protagonist, Yuu, is not cut out to be an actress!

The drawing style is the usual shoujo style. Not especially nice or different enough to be eye catching, but still pleasing enough. The story is indeed quite interesting. In my opinion though, it will never be as good as Skip Beat! There’s a lack of tension, and the humor is not as funny. But still, it makes a good read when I am craving for something new.

Skip Beat Vol. 13

Synopsis:

The moment of TRUTH!!!!! Can Ren live up to his promise to deliver THE ACT OF THE CENTURY? (OK, OK, I’m going overboard here). Momose is very displeased and felt that Ren was looking down on her acting abilities when he said that he will make her act.

*The entire first 3 chapters of this volume was dedicated to showing in detail, the acting of both Ren & Momose in the crucial scene (the one where Ren got stuck before this). I will not be summarizing this part as it will take me forever. And I also feel that I wouldn’t do it enough justice. Please Read The Manga. Suffice to say that Ren was so overwhelmingly good that it surprises everyone. President Lory gave his approval & all is well again on the DM set. And Kyouko realizes something IMPORTANT from watching this scene. NO spoilers regarding that! =P*

After the test (I call it a test because it is a test for Ren given by President Lory to see whether he can still remain in DM), Ren had a private chat with President Lory in his limo about his act just now. They also talked a little about Ren’s past but everything still sounds vague. Kyouko who came to find Ren (to inform him about lunch! Did any of you realize how Kyouko’s always concern about Ren when it comes to food? Just like a wife :P) saw that he was talking seriously with President Lory.

President Lory & Ren realizes that Kyouko was waiting nearby the car. Seeing Ren’s face (as he look at Kyouko – adoringly I’m sure, but the angle was facing off so we didn’t get to see…sob), President Lory was shocked, and correctly assume that Kyouko was the girl that Ren likes and it was from what he felt for her that Ren was able to act out Katsuki. Which actually also meant that Ren wasn’t acting – the current Katsuki is Ren.

Kyouko who was waiting outside all this time suddenly saw a very serious (and sad) look on Ren’s face. She was shocked and wondered how to help him. She suddenly thought of something and ran off. When Ren came out of the limo, he met up with Kyouko, who gave him the purple stone, which is suppose to magic and absorb the negative energy! (fairies & magic alert!!!!). They chatted about Corn, the fairy prince. Although Kyouko still had not realize that Corn was in fact sitting next to her at that time, Ren was already reminiscing about the “child Kyouko”. Their conversation help Ren feel better and after their lunch, Katsuki is back on set!

Review:

Wow, this has to be the shortest summary of all the Skip Beat! volumes I wrote. But if I included the summary on the DM scene, it would definitely be twice as long as my usual length.

Like the previous volume, we’re loaded with Tsuruga Ren here. The main focus shifts to him instead of Kyouko (the protagonist). And I am sure all Skip Beat fangirls enjoyed it. In fact, this is one of my favourite volume :D

Nakamura Sensei really outdone herself here. The entire scene on Katsuki & Mizuki is so detailed but at the same time, can still include the opinions/feedbacks of the sideviewers. Even if it is just an expression on the face (without saying anything) we know what they are thinking when they watch this scene. There’s plenty of humors (just the way I like it), laced together with the feeling of both characters. The look on Katsuki’s face is just incredible and the Mizuki who actually don’t know what is happening (since Ren & Momose are ad-libbing) responded perfectly to him.

Actually, regarding the Kyouko no spoiler just now, I just realize that there is a spoiler in this post if you guys look properly ^_^

Next volume: Kyouko & Sho meets up!!!!!!!!!

PS: A special note here. Two days ago (Sunday) marks the final episode of Skip Beat! anime. It's been a great although short run, and I (and many of you for sure) hope that there will be a 2nd season!!!! And I am pretty sure there would be because the ending was left kind of hanging (those reading the manga should understand). Anyway, I'll be waiting!

Eien no With

Synopsis:

Kurio Hitomi is a child who kept to herself and finds it hard to make friends. This is because her family always moves house after a couple of years. She also feels that her parents care for her baby brother more than for her. She yearns for a dog to keep her company. However this is also impossible because not every place they move to allow pets. Then, during a school trip, she found out about guide dogs (dogs which help guide blind people) and a program which gives a normal family a chance to help raise & look after puppies for a year before letting them go back to train to be guide dogs. These people are called Happy Walkers.

Hitomi begged her parents to allow her to be a Happy Walker so she could at least keep a dog for a year. After considering, Eye, a Labrador puppy finally join the household. His arrival and his subsequent time with the family brought many positive changes. Hitomi’s parents made more time to be with their children for family trips and so forth. Hitomi also finally open up more to the people around her and made friends with her schoolmates. Raising Eye taught Hitomi plenty regarding responsibility and love.

However, a year quickly past and it was suddenly the time for Eye to be brought back to train as a guide dog. Hitomi was heartbroken. She didn’t care for blind people whom have nothing to do with her and she was worried that once Eye is gone, her parents will not care as much for her anymore, she will be alone. She ran off into the forest with Eye chasing her from behind. While crying alone with Eye sitting next to her, Hitomi selfishly consider hurting Eye’s legs so that he will not be able to be a guide dog. But after thinking twice,she was not able to do it. The sky grew dark and Hitomi got lost in the forest. Luckily, Eye guided her safely back. This taught her about the helplessness that blind people feel and finally understand that Eye is needed to guide them. She finally let Eye go. She was also told that Eye will be able to return to them after he retired as a guide dog.

The years pass, and Hitomi is now working as a dog groomer. She has waited all this time for Eye to come home and her wish was finally granted. But all was not fine. Hitomi felt that she had become a stranger to Eye, who only looks out for his previous employer (Note: employer as in a person who employs Eye to be his guide... This means Eye is sort of like “working”). When Eye’s previous employer, Asai Hiroyuki (Hiro for short), decided to come by to visit Eye every month, Hitomi felt resentful towards him. She dislikes the fact that he decided to get a new guide dog but still pretends to care for Eye. She also hate that Eye always seems to be waiting for him to come. Finally things came to a headstand. Hiro purposely showed to Hitomi what happen when he uses Eye instead of Holly (his new dog) as a guide. Eye is now old and easily distracted. Instead of helping keep Hiro safe, he was instead endangered and even fell down. Hitomi cried when she saw all this and drop her resentments & anger. After that, Hiro became a close friend of the family and frequently come over to their home with Holly. He also began dating Hitomi.

Soon one day, Hitomi notice that was something wrong with Eye. A trip to the vet told them that Eye’s got a malignant tumor, in other words, cancer. Treatment is not very successful and percentage of recovery is very low. Eye might die. Hitomi got very depressed & even had a fight with Hiro. But after much thoughts and overhearing Hiro’s little talk with his dog Holly, Hitomi understood that she needs to keep her fighting spirits up and do whatever is possible to cure Eye. They started medication and taking care of Eye. After a long time, Eye finally seems to be cured, but he relapsed again and in the end, he died. It was an emotional time for everyone, but Hitomi was thankful for all the time that Eye was with her.

Review:

Recently, I’ve been surrounded by “dog-related” things. Last month, a friend welcomed a poodle into his home. Last week I read this manga (yep – the one I’m reviewing now!) and cried buckets! I’ve just watch Marley & Me (that’s a dog movie for those who don’t know) yesterday and cried again, & today just before writing this, another of my friend welcomed a shih-tzu to her home! We’re having dog fever here guys! Anyway, I dedicate this review to all my friends and their dogs and I can’t wait for the day that I get a dog of my own.

Seriously though, this manga is great even for those who doesn’t like dogs. Notice that it is only 1 volume long so it makes for a good short story even though the time span is from Hitomi’s childhood all the way to her adulthood (that makes about 17 years!) which included the entire lifetime of Eye (13+ years) as well a five year onward during the ending of the story. Although the story in itself is very simple – it’s about everyday life of a girl & dog – it is not at all boring as I had first thought. It is something that I can relate to myself.

Hitomi’s character is very well developed as we see her growing and learning. She’s not a perfect person. She has everyday flaws like us all. She’s selfish, she throws tantrums and she doesn’t always puts herself in other people’s shoes, which makes her misunderstand other people actions & intentions. But she is likable in spite of all this and she is willing to admit to her mistakes and make changes. And her relationship with Eye & later Hiro, is really something wonderful to see.

The mangaka herself is a dog lover (and owner) and had used her experience to write and draw this story. Most of her works are about dogs & their relationship with people. I’m really glad to read this kind of manga even if the ending is a little sad, but I know that death is imminent and that we can’t stop time.

Bottom line: Read it. And if you’re a person who can cry easily, prepare some tissues beforehand.

Skip Beat Vol. 12

Synopsis:

Both Ren & Yashiro were in the resting room waiting for the shooting to start. Kyouko arrived holding a very large package, which turns out to be Bo’s chicken suit from Bridge Rock. Back in the room, Yashiro is very worried as Ren has been acting all weird. He started to ask Ren when someone knocked the door. It was Bo – except that Bo’s wearing his usual “head” but a duck’s body!!!! Anyway, Bo happens to “pass” by when he noticed Ren’s name on the door, and therefore came to chat with him. Somewhere else, Director Ogata’s having troubles of his own. Seems like someone has ordered him to pass a message which will hurt Ren.

Back to Bo & Ren, they were both discussing about the TV show (refer previous volume). Bo was asking whether Ren was bothered by the age difference of the couple, but Ren said that he support them. This is in total contradiction to what Ren felt for his own problem. Ren himself realized this and had thought it over. He told Bo that any excuse for now would do as long as it prevents him from loving “her”. Even after she graduate, he would find another excuse. Kyouko was shocked by his words and asked him why he is doing this. He answered that at this time, he is not allowed to have someone important, no matter if it’s in the entertainment world or any other way.

Later on her own, Kyouko thought back on the conversation and how painful Ren looked and wonders what will happen if Ren still can’t act as Katsuki. Back in resting room, Ren & Yashiro were informed that the president will be watching the shooting of Katsuki in 2 days. If the president walks out in the middle of the shoot, Ren will immediately be dropped from the cast.The next day, Ren was walking with Yashiro to the car. Ren was lost in his thoughts, he knew that he is unable to surpass “him” (this is referring to the old Katsuki actor, Huzei Shohuu) if he continue his current form. The only Katsuki that Ren can do is as himself. Ren suddenly realizes that if he uses his own personal situation (the one concerning Kyouko of course!!), he will be act out his own Katsuki. Suddenly, both of them saw Kyouko sitting on the staircase (wearing her uniform... kekeke) waiting for them. This brought Ren out of his thoughts. Kyouko brought lunch for him (ahhh... so cute!!). She wanted, even if it’s only a little bit, to help Ren and be a part of his strengths. Ren was really happy and gave one of his rare “real” smile, which of course dried up all the Kyouko demons. He suddenly requested for a favor from her. He wanted her to give her time and body tonight (KYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA) to him.

Kay, I know that last sentence of Ren nearly brought us all to our knees crying, but as usual, it turns out to be a fluke (or does it??? Hehehehe). Ren just wants Kyouko to help him with his script. All she has to do is act as Mizuki in Katsuki’s home. Everthing is impromptu and actually does not follow the script. Kyouko wonders if this is alright. Ren replied that this will be enough for him to find his Katsuki. The scene: Mizuki came to visit Katsuki who was sick at home .I won’t be going into the details of this and just skip to the climax. In the middle of the entire play, Ren fell on top of Kyouko and forgot that they were both in the middle of an act. He just hugged Kyouko without moving and was already on the verge of kissing her! Kyouko went a little ballistic and this woke Ren up. He realizes that what he was doing was entirely his own feelings and emotions, not Katsuki’s. This totally shocked Ren himself, and he couldn’t control his laughter. This kinda pissed Kyouko as she doesn’t understand what Ren was thinking at all (notice that they’re both still currently “acting” as Mizuki & Katsuki). Anyway, Ren gave some inconsequential explanation, and the act ended there.

The next day, a happy Kyouko walked into the DM set, just to see both President Lory & Ren glaring at each other (a confrontation!!) with Director Ogata looking very worried in the middle. Later on, Ren went to talk to a very angry (and sad) Kyouko. Seems like she is the only one who didn’t know about the “president walk out and Ren will be drop” thing and this makes her a little sad. This shocked Ren a little.The shooting is going to start soon when Ren noticed that Momose was looking a little displeased. This prompt him to ask Director Ogata for a favor. He wants the scene to divulge from the script – making it a complete improvisation, even though the ending (where Mizuki leaves to prepare tea for Katsuki) and the focus and direction of the scene will stay the same. This surprises everyone, as this will make things difficult for Momose. Ren replied that he is sure Momose will be happy to do this since they had redone the old scene so many times that she is sure to be sick of it. Ogata worries that Momose is unable to react to Ren’s improvisation correctly. Ren replies confidently that she will, because he will make her act!

Review:

MY, MY, MY!!!! This is a volume that has everything, and I mean everything! The front part with Bo was hilarious (Chicken duck anyone??). The part where Kyouko brought Ren lunch was sweet, and when they were both acting in Ren’s house, we get to see a completely new side of Ren where he let everything out and was soooooo cute when he couldn’t stop laughing! And the climax at the shooting set was so tense! This makes the anticipation for the next volume almost unbearable. Lucky for me, I already get to read what happen!

Note: I realize that I have previously spelled Momose's name as Mimose. It is a spelling error for sure and I am sorry for it.

Ouran Koukou Vol. 7 & 8

Synopsis:

The first chapter focuses on Kyouya as the hosts (minus Haruhi) decided to make a trip to the commoners department store. The entire group (unsurprisingly) lost Kyouya in the store. He was without wallet or handphone when he bumped into Haruhi who also happened to be shopping there.

The next 2 chapters was about Hunny’s relationship with his younger brother Chika, who is also good in martial arts, but could never surpass Hunny. Seems like the Haninozuka family have a tradition whereby when you meet a family member, you greet them by fighting (very funny!!!) Another new character to note is that Mori’s brother Satoshi, is also Chika’s guardian! So it’s like there’s the Honey & Mori pair (elder), & Chika & Satoshi pair. Get it? Here, the story of how Honey defected from the Karate Club to the Host Club was also revealed. It was really kind of sweet….*Grin*

The last chapter is (another wasted chapter IMO) about the Robelia Girls, trying to pull Haruhi in again. There is also an additional chapter on Hikaru & Kaoru’s childhoods, which is in its twisted but sad way, quite interesting.

For volume 8, there is a campus fright fest (a class activity held by Haruhi’s class) for the first chapter. The 2^nd chapter however is more interesting, as we get to see the relationship between Tamaki & Kyouya when they first met (completely from Kyouya’s POV).Kyouya hates Tamaki at first and is jealous of him, but as they get to know each other more and found out more about each others family situation, it was clear that Kyouya respected him. And the winter that year, Tamaki proposes to form a club with him.

The last 2 chapters introduce yet another new side character, Kasanoda, heir to the most mafia gang in the Kanto region. Born with an extremely scary face (suitable for gangster), but just want to have fun & make friends, Kasanoda wanted Mori as his master because although Mori has scary serious looks like him, the he manages to be liked by everyone. Therefore, Kasanoda wants to learn his secret!

Reviews:

I am truly a little disappointed with these 2 volumes. After much development in Vol. 6, we’re are back again to slapstick comedies and some boring acts (I always hated the Robelia girls chapters... don’t understand why they keep coming back). The only positive thing I can say here is that there are some interesting flashback to the history of the hosts – like how the club came to be, and how the members are formed. Another thing to note is that the artwork here finally looks a little cleaner compared to before. Hopefully this trend will keep up.

Skip Beat Vol. 11

Synopsis:

This volume started off with a very young Kyouko, crying to Corn & asking him not to leave (seems like Corn lives in another “world”). Corn gave her THE STONE, which he said is magical. The scene shifts to Ren waking up from the dream.

At the studio set, filming was going on, with evil Mio & Mizuki fighting. It is clear that Kyouko has completely embraced her character and won the approval of everyone. For the next shoot, it involves a very important scene between Katsuki & Mizuki, on how he tries to stop himself from showing his feelings for Mizuki because of his revenge plan on her family. For the first time in the shooting of DM, Ren who had a perfect record of no NGs, had 4 for this scene. Director Ogata tries to explain to Ren that this scene is vital in showing the development of Katsuki’s feelings towards Mizuki & his inner conflict regarding this forbidden love.Elsewhere, Sho was imagining both Ren & Kyouko in a lovey-dovey situation, and this pissed him off extremely (sorry for the use of vulgar words, but I can’t seem to think of a better expression….LOLZ). Back at DM set, Ren was still unable to act out the scene, blanking out each time (actors block???). Everyone’s extremely worried, including Yashiro, who told Kyouko that he had never seen Ren in such a bad situation. No one expected Ren would be so utterly incapable of playing Katsuki, including Ren himself who seems completely lost.

2 days later, the DM shooting schedule was rearranged so that Katsuki’s scenes can be move backwards. Director Ogata confided to Kyouko about how he is unable to help Ren at all, other than telling him to take his time and return after he has found his own Katsuki.

After Bridge Rocks (is this the name? I think so... hehehe) shooting, Kyouko who was pushing Bo’s suit to keep, was still very worried over Ren, and wonders how she could help him the way he had helped her. Suddenly, she saw Ren sitting at a corner, looking very very DARK & FRUSTRATED. Kyouko, who was actually going to run away, suddenly thought of “chatting” with him using Bo’s character.

Although silent at first, Ren finally asked Bo – “Have you ever been in love?” and admitted that he has not. This shocked Kyouko almost into oblivion (hahahaha). Ren continued to explain on how he tried to cover up using his acting abilities but he failed to put in emotions into it. Kyouko, who was thinking about her own failure & Sho accidentally brought her feelings to reality & started “jumping up & down – wanting to crush the cockroach Sho” (OK…THIS IS REALLY HARD TO EXPLAIN!!! Kyouko’s actions are always weird to the extreme). Ren got mad at her, thinking that she is not seriously listening to him, and started to pull off Bo’s hat!!!! Kyouko was so afraid he would pull off Bo’s head (whereby Kyouko would be revealed) that she hanged on to it for life!!! The end result was HILARIOUS!!!!!

Elsewhere, President Lory appeared on DM set, shocking everyone. He asked about Ren’s whereabouts (the President is already suspicious) and said that he will be back again the next day. Back to Ren & Bo, Ren was still laughing over Bo’s “bald head”!!! Although unable really to help him, Kyouko was glad that she at least made him smile again & released some of his tension. Ren questioned about what is love (he really have 0 experience on this!) Kyouko tried to put in simply by saying that with love, even little things would make him happy. She asked him whether there is a time where he thought a girl was cute or pretty by her actions. Ren’s immediate thought was to Kyouko!!!! He asked Bo what it represents... and Bo answered him that this is a sign - a prelude to love!!!!!!!!!!!!

After leaving, Ren (in his set-up – or do you call makeup?? - room) thought how ridiculous it is to get love advice from a chicken (OMG!!! THIS IS PRICELESS). His thoughts went back to their conversation. Ren admitted to Bo that the girl he likes is a high school student, and that at this moment, he has no intention of falling for anyone. Bo was extremely happy as his current situation resemble Katsuki’s, and encourages Ren to deepen his relationship with the girl.

At this moment, Yashiro came in, feeling very concerned. He advised Ren to eat even though he is worried over the DM – shocking Ren, as he is not thinking about the drama at all, but about love & Kyouko!!!

Back at DM set, while changing costumes, Mimose-san (that’s the actress playing Mizuki) commented on how she felt disappointed with Ren’s acting and how Kyouko’s is better even though she’s a newcomer. Kyouko was soooo shocked, she ran off crying! To Kyouko, Ren is above everyone else, and she felt that he can’t be compared to the rest of them (hehehehe). Kyouko called Yashiro, asking for Ren’s schedule for the following day. Yashiro agrees... on 2 conditions (HEHEHEHE... EVIL GRIN).

That night, when driving back, Ren was surprised to see Kyouko waiting for him in front of his house. Bo’s words - just seeing the face of your love ones will make you happy no matter how weary you are – came drifting back to Ren as he smiled back to Kyouko & greeted her. Turns out that Yashiro wanted Kyouko to have dinner with Ren & also speak to him about his work. In his home, while eating dinner, both of the watch a show on the TV about a couple with an age difference of 19 years. Kyouko asked Ren what he feels about the TV couple, and he seems to have no problem with it. This surprises Kyouko, as Ren accepts it if it is another couple, but not when it comes to himself. When fetching Kyouko back home, and saying their goodbyes, Kyouko said some really encouraging words (while looking really cute & sweet) about how she more than others, want to see Ren’s Katsuki and that she will wait for him!!!

Reviews:

Oh my goodness! Does this volume seem longer than the others? There’s so much going on. We get to see Ren struggle for the first time ever! And this volume also clearly shows how much Kyouko looks up to Ren and how she cares for him (compared to the start when she hated him! LOLZ). This is also the first time Ren actually realize and acknowledges to himself his feelings towards Kyouko (KYAAAAA!!!).

One thing though that I find a little unrealistic is how young Director Ogata looks! Just like a teenager! In fact, he looks younger than Ren (who is 20 years old). Although I understand that aspiring directors can be as young as in their 20s, but Ogata is the director of DM, a very important drama. Shouldn’t he be at least in his 30s?

Skip Beat Vol. 10

Synopsis:

The day has finally arrived! It is the press conference for the Dark Moon announcement & Director Ogata looks as if he’s going to have fits out of nervousness. Kyouko also noticed that Ren doesn’t look like his usual self either. A little info on the drama: Tsukigomori was actually a top rated drama aired 20 years ago. It was directed by Hirotaka Date (whom was revealed at the announcement to be Director Ogata’s father) and starring famous actor Shuuhei Hozu. Ren will be playing the main character Katsuki (a teacher) who was in love with his student Mizuki, eventhough he was engaged to her sister at that time. Kyouko plays Mizuki’s other sister, Mio, a dark person who has a prominent scar on her forehead from a previous accident (technically speaking – Kyouko plays the bad guy! hahahahahaha).
Plenty of people are apprehensive of the new drama, wondering if it is able to surpass the old drama. At the announcement, when a reporter questioned Ogata regarding his relationship with Hirotaka Date, the previous director, Ogata was so shocked & nervous (?) that he fainted! It is indeed a bad start for the entire of DM group.

The shooting of DM finally started. Everything seems to be going good (although Ogata seems to be on the verge of fainting all the time), until the shooting of Mio. Kyouko was deemed by Izuki-san (the actress who played Mio in Tsukigomori, now in DM instead as the mother) to be not good enough. Ren steps in and requested that Kyouko be given some time reprieve to think over her character, in which after, Izuki-san may test her again. Ren practically “guarantees” that Kyouko will find the Mio that will satisfy everyone.

While pondering over Mio (with Yashiro by her side), Kyouko finally manage to realize “her Mio”. She promptly ran off without explaining. When the rest of the cast was told of this, Ren AGAIN backs Kyouko, and request the Director to trust her and continue with the rest of the shooting first, while waiting for Kyouko to return. Ogata agreed.

When Kyouko finally return on set (after 3 hours!), she shocked everyone – her wig was gone, and she dyed her original short hair completely black, showing the scar prominently to everyone (the scar was previously covered by the wig). During the test given by Izuki-san, she performed incredibly (she was SOOOO EVILLL), which pleased Ren very much (hehehehehehe), and gave Ogata such inspiration that he was again fired up to work on DM (no more fainting fits!).

After “waking” up from her Mio character, Kyouko promptly went into one of her dramatic “apologies” to everyone. Ogata forgave her, and informed that Kyouko’s Mio gave him such inspiration and confidence to do the DM he imagined to be that he wants Kyouko to use her “Mio”. At this time, Ren also ponders on his Katsuki and how he will surpass the old one. Flashback shows President Lory asking Ren whether he can act a man who’s in love with a girl but must suppress his feelings for her.
Kyouko suddenly appeared in front of Ren to do another of her “apologies” (This scene cannot be missed!!!). Ren replies that if she had came back with a mediocre Mio, he would not have forgiven her, but her current Mio surpassed his expectations, and that is enough for him. Somewhere else, Sho saw the poster of DM and realized that Kyouko is starring in it (with Ren, no less!).

Reviews:

An entire volume on DM (which is what I’m gonna use for Dark Moon, to make things easier for my fingers, LOL) and a paltry 6 pages for Sho... HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Everything looks good, and the storyline is incredibly interesting, especially about how Kyouko found her Mio. I love how the development between her & Ren went. They have upgraded to calling each other on the phone privately (kekekeke, this shocked Yashiro when he found out), and speaking to each other privately when in between shootings (this made all the other supporting cast jealous). And Ren even supported Kyouko TWICE (read my synopsis). And it is incredible to watch Kyouko grow from a fledging actress who have no previous experience in acting (PVs & commercial don’t count. I’m talking bout full-length dramas). Phew... I can’t wait to summarize the next volume.

Skip Beat Vol. 9

Synopsis:

As hinted in the previous volume, a bratty kid actor -Uesugi Hiou – appeared on the same show where Kyouko works as Bo, the chicken (I could never in my life remember the name of that show!!!). Turns out that Hiou-kun is part of a family of famous actors and he was influential enough to get Moko-san fired from her drama-series job. There had been a misunderstanding between the two of them when Moko threw Hiou-kun while “playing” and injured him.

However, when the three of them (Kyouko, Moko & Hiou) met up, Moko finally revealed why she acted that way when she was suppose to “play” with Hiou-kun in of of the drama scenes. She brought the other two to her home – and it is a huge family!!! With loads of kids who just throw and stick themselves to Moko like leeches whenever she comes back!!! The only way to get them off is to throw them away. That was the only way Moko knows how to play with kids. Both Kyouko & Hiou-kun stayed over for a night at her place and it was a really interesting experience for them.

The next day, Ren appeared at President Lory’s office for a discussion, where the latter told Ren about his love life being too boring and cold, and that he also cannot act in romantic scenes. The president also warn him that this could be detrimental because Ren is now at a age where he will be required to act in romantic dramas more frequently especially for Ren’s next work – a remake of a famous, old drama. (KYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am sure you fans know what drama that’s is!!!). At the same time, Hiou-kun seems to have forgiven Moko and told her to go back to work.

Later on, Moko forced Kyouko to reveal her secret as well (the thing about Fuwa Shou). After much hilarious scenes, Kyouko finally told Moko everything, including the fact that Ren is currently angry with her for reasons that she can’t understand. Moko then asked her whether there might be a chance in which Ren likes Kyouko & is jealous of Shou, which is why he is so mad about the angel PV work (great work, Moko!!!!). Of course, Kyouko cannot accept this as a reason, and in the end decided that it’s because Ren noticed that Kyouko lied about not doing this work for revenge and think that she is still not serious in becoming a real actress.
The scene shifts to the part where Kyouko’s manager told her that she was asked to work in a new drama which also starrs Tsuruga Ren. Wanting to accept the work, she decided to apologize to Ren the next time they meet. However, that happens right away in front of the lift. Kyouko was so shocked, she screamed and closed the lift in front of Ren! After much drama, Kyouko finally apologized properly, and felt happy that she can work with Ren without feeling guilty. However, Ren (privately) still showed an angry face.

Kyouko finally met Director Ogata (the guy who’s going to direct the drama) for the first time (really funny scenes here!) And Ren had another talk with President Lory, requesting for the president to allow him to join the cast of the new drama, Tsukigomori. Lory was reluctant, and warned Ren again about the fact that he will be unable to act as a man in love because of his current situation. The scene shifts back to Kyouko as she cried after realizing her character in the drama is an evil girl, instead of the rich young lady (the kind of character Kyouko likes – princesses & such). Ren appeared and persuaded Kyouko to join him – turns out that the president allowed him to act in the drama after all. Unable to refuse his charms, Kyouko agreed.

Reviews:

Wow. After such a long break, here I am again, with a super long summary.
I do not really like the earlier chapters (No Ren... sigh...) but the later chapters of this volume is wonderful!!!!!!!!! I just can’t praise it enough.

Finally – the Dark Moon arc is starting!!!!!!!!!!! Spanning quite a number of volumes, Dark Moon (the new name for the drama Tsukigomori) will be Kyouko’s first official serious acting work. And she gets to work with Ren!!!! More about the drama will be explain in the next volume. Keep a lookout!

PS: I’ve been really slow at updating, but I will be concentrating mainly on Skip Beat’s volume synopsis and hopefully update on Ouran as well. I will be reviewing a new series soon, but that's for later..hehehe...Bear with me please ^_^

Skip Beat! Vol. 8

Synopsis:

We continue on with the shooting of Shou’s PV. During the break, Shou revealed that even though he thought of Kyouko as a servant before, now he felt that she belongs to him! (BAKA SHOU...... YOU IDIOT...... Kyouko will never be yours!@@)

The final part of the PV was where Kyouko’s angel was suppose to kill the demon. However, her real life hatred for Shou got in the way of her acting, and she was unable to finish the scene properly. Feeling very down, she called Ren, but was unable to reach him. Therefore, she left a message that doesn’t make sense (because Kyouko is Kyouko, you just have to accept this... LOLZ). Instead, she talked to Moko (Kanae~ who’s also part of Love Me) whom is already a best friend in Kyouko’s eyes (how sweet......). Kanae told her that if she is the angel who fell in love with the demon, she would hate Kyouko for killing him, to the point where she would kill her.

With the help from Moko, Kyouko finally grasped the feeling of her character and successfully finish the killing scene. However, Sho was the one who got shocked as Kyouko suddenly cried (in the scene). He was unable to potray the demon who fell in love with Mimori. Instead, he seems to be in love with Kyouko’s angel. Shou had to retake the scene again (without Kyouko though). At the same time, Ren receives Kyouko’s message, and for the first time, irregardless of his work (he is in the middle of a shoot himself), he decided to call back. This shocked Yukihito, as Ren has always been the professional worker who doesn’t take personal calls during work.

As the shooting wraps up, Shou confessed that he didn’t know what to do when he saw Kyouko cry (even from when they were young). Kyouko replied that she realizes this, which is why she never cry in front of him again, and instead will go off alone to cry – where she meets Corn for the first time. At the same time, Ren’s phone call finally got through (who knows how many times he called her...hahha), asking her to explain her weird message previously. Kyouko was extremely happy to hear from him. However, the happiness was short-live as Shou stole the phone from her and claimed to Ren that Kyouko is happy because she acted in his PV. This made Ren extremely angry inside.

When the both of them finally met up the next day, Kyouko was extremely afraid as Ren was displeased with her. She tried to explain that she chose to work in Sho’s PV because it seems interesting and not revenge (which is actually not all that true). Later on, meeting up with Moko (who seemed troubled), Kyouko had a small quarrel with her as well because Moko refused to confide her problems with her.
Kyouko decided with Maria to investigate Moko and they saw Moko dressing up and going out with several different men, which shocked Kyouko, although she didn’t know how to confront her about it. Later on, back at the Darumiya restaurant, Kyouko caught Moko red-handed having a meal there with yet another old geezer! However, Moko was still refusing to tell her the truth.

The next day at LME building, Kyouko overheard some girls gossiping about problems with Moko’s drama work. A new character – a young boy actor – appeared. Seems like he has some kind of grudge with Moko, and plans to make sure that Moko can never work in the entertainment industry again!

Review:

Wow. The scenes with Sho’s PV is really interesting. I love almost every part of it, even if I hate Sho!!! Ren’s anger towards Kyouko was not explained much. At first, I thought it’s because he is jealous when he heard Sho’s voice through the phone. But it also might be because he is displeased with Kyouko’s attitude towards her work in the PV.

The later chapters in this volume – the ones regarding Moko’s work and the new kid wasn’t as interesting as the front part. Much as I enjoy Moko’s character, I hope we can get on quickly with Ren & Kyouko... sigh...

Skip Beat! Vol. 7

Synopsis:

From where we left off in volume 6, Ren was surprised with Kyouko’s development in her skills. Questioning her about her motives for joining the industry to get revenge on Fuwa Shou, Kyouko replied that she practice acting now not because of revenge, but because she wants to be herself, Mogami Kyouko. From young, all that she has done was for others. Therefore, it is the first time she is doing something for herself. Ren was extremely pleased with her answer.

The next day after school, Kyouko saw the Kyurara commercial in public for the first time. It was a considerable success although Kyouko did not shine as much as Moko in the commercial. She met up with Ren as well as Yukihito-san, where the former gave her 90 points for her work as his temporary manager (it was actually 100 points but Ren stamped a minus 10 points on it making a total of 90 points and a mad Kyouko! LOLZ). At the same time, Fuwa Shou’s company called to request for the Love Me Section members to act in his latest promotional video (PV). However, Moko-san was unable to accept as she is going to work on a new drama, making Kyouko the only member who is going to work on Shou’s video. Kyouko accepted, very pleased to being able to use Shou as a stepping stone to rise in the industry as an actress. The scene shift to Shou watching the Kyurara’s commercial, wondering if the actress Kyouko is the same Kyouko that he knew.

On the day of the shooting, Kyouko met Shou again after such a long time, although she pretended not to know him. At the same time, Kyouko found out that the substitute actress for Moko-san in the PV is Mimori (a classmate of Kyouko, meaning that she knows kyouko’s full name!). Shou is seriously suspects Kyouko’s identity by now and tried to question Mimori, but was stopped by Kyouko’s demons. However, several incidents finally proved to Sho that Kyouko is really Mogami Kyouko – and from then on, the battle begins!

A little info on the PV shoot: the story is about 2 angels (Kyouko & Mimori) who were the best of friends, but a demon (Fuwa Shou) came in between of them, and Mimori’s character fell in love with him. However, Kyouko’s angel fear for her friend’s life and therefore decided to kill the demon.

Review:

Although this volume did not showcase much “acting” by all our main characters, we get to see a lot of real Kyouko scenes, which are really cute. And the final part of the volume is an incredible cliffhanger as Kyouko appeared in her costume for the PV shoot (She looks incredible!!!) and Shou was warned that Kyouko has the ability to pull other people in with her acting which makes it dangerous for Shou as he is suppose to be the one in charge. I’m so happy to see the shocked expression on Shou’s face. You deserve it!!!! Who asked you to dump Kyouko. GO REN!!!!!!

The drawing of the costumes worn by the 3 characters in the PV is incredibly detailed. I love Kyouko’s dress the most!

Skip Beat! Vol. 6

Synopsis:

The girls (Kyouko & Moko) were warned not to get sick or injured before the shooting of the CM advertisement. Overhearing this, Erika who had not given up decide to send a couple of guys to hurt them. When the girls were on the street chatting & strengthening their “friendship” (Kyouko practically force Moko to window shop & eat ice-cream together because it’s what girlfriends do!), they unconsciously avoided Erika’s guys (who in the end got hurt themselves). When Erika decided to take things into her own hands, she got injured as well! Moko said some really hard but good advice to Erika, whom finally realize her mistake and decided to fight and work her way up the entertainment industry the fair way.

The shooting of CM advertisement was finally done. It was reveal that Kyouko had to drop out from her school (because of baka-Shou) and felt very regretful that she had no experience as a high school girl. Yashiro-san got sick and had to take leave. The company sent Kyouko to act as a temporary manager for Ren, but she didn’t really do a good job at it (mostly because no one would believe that she’s his manager... LOL). At the same time, President Lory informed Kyouko that she can enter a private high school. Kyouko was so determined to enter that she started studying like crazy for the entrance exam. Ren, who prided himself in never falling sick, finally fell sick as well (caught the flu from Yashiro-san). Kyouko took such good care of him that he wonders why she’s working so hard eventhough he hadn’t been nice to her. The next day when Ren was better & started working again, he almost caught Kyouko playing around with her Ren-doll...luckily he didn’t see the doll & thought that Kyouko was just studying his character (in the movie that he’s currently acting in). Later, Kyouko also help Ren in memorizing his script. Ren realize that her “voice acting” has gotten much better, and it surprises him again.

Review:

There’s a lot going on here (compared to the previous volume which concentrates only on the CM audition). I’m freakingly happy to see more scenes of our 2 main characters – together again... LOL... the scenes where Kyouko was taking care of Ren was really cute & sweet, and the appearance of Ren-doll was a lovely addition. There’s just so much to read and notice in this volume. Read it to find out more!

Skip Beat! Vol. 5

Synopsis:

Well, it turns out that Kyouko wasn’t fired from her chicken role (the name’s Bo which I will be using from now on) after all. Seems that the audience loved her “enthusiasm” and she was funny (of course!). When leaving the studio, she had yet another encounter with Ren, who frightened the life out of her, but also giving her good tips on how an actor should attract as much attention as possible and take advantage of every opportunity in the entertainment industry.

Later on, Kyouko decided to audition to act in a CM (a type of beverage) advertisement. When at the audition, she met a arrogant and rude actress, Erika, whom everyone seems to be afraid of. Even Moko who also audition fear her. Since Erika uses her connection, she was always able to get the role that she audition for. Both Kyouko & Moko made no impression at all as all the other girls made a circus of themselves. They decided to team up and wear their bright pink Love me outfits to attract attention!!! And they did. The director was noticing them. Furthermore, to make it even easier for Kyouko & Moko, the director decided to audition the girls by breaking them into pairs. The first test was for the pair of girls to get into a quarrel over a guy. Even though they didn’t discussed anything beforehand, both girls manage to complete the test successfully, surprising everyone. The 2^nd test was a follow up, where the girls have to “reconcile”, after fighting. This time Kyouko manage to think up of a good idea, but it was stolen by Erika. When it came to their turn to act, Kyouko thought of an even better idea to show Moko’s & her reconciliation. With such great partnership, both of them passed the audition & were chosen to act in the CM advert.

Review:

The highlight of this volume is definitely the audition tests for the CM advert. This is definitely one of my favorite arc story in the manga. The way Kyouko & Moko act in the test showed how much talent they have, especially Kyouko who have an “inner” talent that not many people can see, whereas Moko’s talent is more clearly seen for the present time.

Ouran Koukou Vol. 6

Synopsis:

It is the season for the school festival, and Ouran students does it in a grand scale indeed. All clubs & societies are competing for the central saloon – the most strategic place for a “booth” (if you can even call it that!) during the festival. Host Club, naturally, is competing for it as well. A treasure hunt race between the, & the football club will determine the winner. At the same time, someone is sending threatening letters to the Host Club.

With all the happenings, Host Club still manage to win the treasure hunt beautifully with style too. Turns out that the sender of the letters was the fiancee of the football club president. She just wanted him to notice her more instead of challenging Kyouya all the time. However, she’s not just the only one sending the letters, the anonymous empty letters with invisible ink were actually sent by Tamaki’s dad to tease him.

School festival arrived & Host Club is extra grand and very successful. Even Tamaki’s grandmother came. However, she showed her extreme displeasure for him and harshly told him not to touch her. The rest of the hosts told Haruhi about Tamaki’s past – his mother is actually a French women whom Tamaki’s father left his wife for. Because of that, the grandmother hated her (for more of this story, do read and support the manga!).

Review:

This is one of my favourite volumes because it reveal for the first time, so much of Tamaki’s life and why he is what he is now. Furthermore, this story arc about the school festival is one of the first stories arc that actually extend to more than 1 chapter. In fact, it covers almost the entire of volume 6. This show that the manga storyline is finally getting somewhere instead of nowhere.

Let us look forward to volume 7 & beyond!

Skip Beat! Vol. 4

Synopsis:

Volume 4 open off with a flashback to Maria’s story about what she felt regarding her estranged relationship with her father. It closely resemble the play that Kyouko is currently “acting” in the challenge with the other actress. Unconsciously, Maria was drawn into the play and started replying to Kyouko’s words. It is a very touching scene as Maria finally admitted to how much her father loves her. From this event, it was also revealed that Kyouko herself does not have a good relationship with her own parents.

Later on, Kyouko was at the company building staircase, “strengthening” herself up with the “magical powers” of the crystal stone that Corn (a childhood friend) had given her. Unfortunately, the stone fell way down stairs right at the leg of Ren. When returning the stone, both of them had a very illuminating conversation (which you guys should read for yourself!). When Ren left, he mentioned – “how could someone change so much...” and yet, she didn’t changed as much as I had.

Kyouko continued her acting lessons, and managed to land a role on an entertainment tv show – as a chicken (their mascot, it seems). On her first day of the job, guess who would have appeared as a guest star – Shou! It is an incredible “meeting” of sorts between the 2. Kyouko was fired up, and she had the advantage of the chicken suit (it means that Shou didn’t know it was her). Of course, he did manage to guess that it was Kyouko in the suit. Things got so messed up that she was fired from her job as the chicken...

Upset, Kyouko wandered around the station, and it really was her unlucky (although I would say she was lucky) day! Ren was brooding around as well. However, he didn’t recognize the chicken! Seems that Ren was having some trouble understanding his script, and he asked the chicken for help. Here, Ren revealed a little about his own past and Kyouko saw yet another side of his personality. When both of them separated, Kyouko vow to do her best for tomorrow even though there’s plenty of challenges ahead.

Review:

Whew! Back to reviewing Skip Beat at last! I just noticed that my synopsis for volume 3 is unusually long. I’ll try to tone it down, which means less spoilers here.

Moko made quite a number of appearances here, although mostly for the funny scenes. There aren’t too much happenings in this volume except for the Kyouko-Shou battle at the tv station. In fact, my favourite scene would be the final part where Kyouko & Ren had a nice conversation and in my opinion, this is when Kyouko finally start liking Ren as a person, and not just respect or fear him.

It is quite clear from Ren’s words about both him & Kyouko changing that he is Corn – Kyouko’s childhood friend who gave her the magical stone that can absorb dark evil thoughts or feelings (at least that’s my interpretation of it). Although, Ren is clearly unwilling to reveal this fact to her (spoilers: and will not do so even up till the later volumes). Kyouko think of Corn as a magical being with powers, not human. I can't wait for the development of our 2 main characters.

As a side note, of this date, i found out that Skip Beat! will be made into an anime as well as a Taiwan idol drama. I'll just say that I am happy to hear of the making of the anime, and not so pleased about the drama as I don't think that it will be good enough to live up to the manga.

Diamond Head Vol. 2

Synopsis:

It was almost Christmas. A new guy, Setsu (very good looking as well), appeared in school. He turned out to be an old friend of Leica & the gang who moved away 3 years ago. A new case regarding plagiarism of an artwork was filed. Setsu was invited to join back in the judicature club but he refused.

Although the rest of the members wanted to finish the case quickly, but Leica requested that they postpone it to the next semester – not giving a clear reason for his request. Back at the art gallery, Kirihiko caught Setsu looking at the 2 similar artworks and asked if he found anything. The former replied that he wasn’t looking at all and said that it was a pain to be with the guys.

The chapter ended with Katsuma asking Nanao to go out with him and Leica again asking Setsu to join the club.

He managed to “persuade” Setsu and the gang went to investigate the plagiarism case. During the investigation, Setsu was drawn to the case and requested to be allowed to debate in the trial. It seems that he have solved the case. Both the plaintiff and the defendant were friends who lived nearby. The reason their artwork was similar was because both took their inspiration from the scenery of the road where they parted each day when walking home together. At the end of the trial, Setsu officially join the judicature club.

It was the start of the new semester when Nanao (now in 2^nd year) found out through her classmates that she is dating Katsuma. Seems like he used Nanao as an excuse to turn down the girl who confessed to him. In retaliation, the girl decided to file a claim against him for hurting her emotionally. The trial is a total hoo-haa (sorry for that phrase..hehhee) as Nanao rejected Katsuma in front of everyone. Another girl – Mizuki Miyamora – ask to be allowed to join the judicature club because she has a crush on Setsu. However, she was turned down as well.

In the following chapter, Leica was absent. Worried, the gang decided to visit him. The found him lying on the floor without his pants on! It was all a big joke when they found out that Leica was just hungry! He ran out of energy while dressing. So each one tried to cook for him but it was a failure!!!! Finally – hehehe – I won’t reveal this ending. Read the manga to find out!

Reviews:

Hahaha... This is a very nice volume. There’s plenty of laughs especially for the the last 2 chapters where the girl file a claim against Katsuma & also the one where Leica was hungry. As much as I like the seriousness of the manga when it deals with its own issues, I still love a good laugh here and there. Setsu is a good addition and nicely introduced.

One thing I realized about this manga is that even though Katsuma is a potential love interest of Nanao, he seems to be the only character that doesn’t pull my interest.

I like the scenes with Leica & Kirihiko, and even Setsu who just appeared in this volume, but I can never remember Katsuma’s name... (I have to refer back to the manga over and over again!)This is very strange considering that Katsuma received equal “screen time” as the other characters. Hmm... have to think back on this one.

A note aside: I apologize for the error made for Diamond Head Volume 1 review. It was stated that this manga was 3 volumes long, but in actual – it is 5 volumes long. Sorry for the mistake.

Ouran Koukou Vol.4 & 5

Synopsis:

To continue from the previous volume, Ranka caught Tamaki & Haruhi in a very “weird” position. Naturally poor Tamaki have to suffer for the entire chapter! We learn more on why Haruhi became so independent, even as a 9 year old kid. Tamaki & Ranka did have a little Father-to-Father talk, although that didn’t last long (hehehe).

The 2^nd chapter was about Honey-senpai having a cavity (around Valentine’s day, no less!) and the entire Host Club was banned from sweets. Chapter 3 was a parody of Alice in Wonderland, whereas Chapter 4 told of how the Newspaper Club tried to sabotage the Host Club. In this chapter, Haruhi also found out about how powerful the Suou’s (Tamaki’s family) is – and that Ouran High was actually owned by Suou’s family.

The start of volume 5 details on how Haruhi’s exam ranking fell to the 3^rd. Therefore, she might be expelled (since scholarship’s students have to be a the top of their class). Kyouya invited the top female student of his year – Ayame to teach Haruhi for her make-up test. Turns out that Ayame has some kind of grades complex against Tamaki (he’s always the 2^nd in the class whereas she’s 3^rd). But she also has some sort of crush for him (so cute!!!). All ends well though, and Haruhi manage to clear the make-up test.

The next 3 chapters were set in Karuizawa where Haruhi was working for summer vacation. The Host Club followed her there. And old junior high classmate of Haruhi turned up, which made Hikaru & Kaoru extremely jealous.

In the last chapter of volume 5, a little girl – Kirimi – appeared and thought that Tamaki was her “heroic” older brother. Turns out that her brother was actually Nekozawa (remember the dark, scary guy who always wear a robe & had a cat puppet on his hand always?), the president of the black magic club. This chapter regales about how the host club tried to bring the siblings together again (Kirimi hates her brother because she can’t stand dark scary things)

Reviews:

This summary comprises of both volume 4 & 5. In both of these volumes, I notice that the drawings are extremely messy – as in there’s just too much to see.
However, the stories are interesting. We get to see how Haruhi was when she was a child. Kyouya was extremely scary when he got woken up “too early”, and other little things. Tamaki did a lot of sulking here – I can see why so many readers find him annoying, but I think him more as endearing and yes – very idiotic as well.

I find that the chapter 3 in volume 4 – the parody on Alice in Wonderland – quite a waste of space. I would rather that the mangaka continues with the story. Maybe she fresh out of ideas or something.

Looking forward to the next volume!

Ouran Koukou Vol. 3

Synopsis:

Ahh….at long last, I decided to update on Ouran.

In this new chapter, the hosts decided to make a trip to the beach! ALONG WITH THEIR CLIENTS. Of course, Kyouya was the culprit. There is money to make!
After loads of crap from each host (as usual), they decided to make a game out of “who can find out Haruhi’s weakness”. But it was kind of a failure as Haruhi wasn’t afraid of practically everything!

A group of boys tried to hit on the girls (the host’s clients) on top of the cliff, but when they refused, the boys started to get rough. Haruhi threw some shells on them and ask them to let go of the girls. The boys got mad and pushed her instead off the cliff! Tamaki saved her, and scolded her for being so foolhardy. Haruhi refused to admit to her mistake as she thought that she did no wrong. Tamaki got mad and refused to speak to her any longer.

Back at the mansion, Tamaki was being depressed whereas Haruhi was acting immature. Tamaki got so mad that he decided to go to bed. After he left, Haruhi said that she should have learn martial arts so that what happened previously could be avoided. Hunny advice her and told her to apologize to everyone, especially to Tamaki. It was not the problem of Haruhi not being able to save others, but it’s that she made everyone worried for her. That was why Tamaki was so mad at her – that she was being thoughtless of the fact that she is still a girl and has her limits.

Haruhi ate too much crabs and had to rush to the toilet (which turns out to be the one in Kyouya’s room). When she came out, Kyouya pushed her on the bed, and said that if he decided to take her, she would be defenseless against him. Haruhi realizes that Kyouya was trying to show her what Hunny said before. She knew that Kyouya would never molest her because he gains nothing from it.

Tamaki came looking for Kyouya and the latter went out, leaving him alone with Haruhi. She started to apologize but it ended up in a quarrel instead. Tamaki started to leave when the thunderstorm came. Haruhi was afraid of thunder and climbed into the cupboard to hide. Tamaki realizes that Haruhi has always been alone at home, and that she has learned to be independent, which was why she never call for help no matter what. He persuaded her to come out of the cupboard and told her that he will not take his eyes off her from then onwards so she could not do anything reckless again.

Chapter 10 introduces a new group of characters – the girls of St. Robelia’s Girls Academy’s White Lily Group who tried to pull Haruhi from the Host Club.

Chapter 11 was about Halloween Day where Haruhi was the only one who saw the Ghost (which turns out to be a trick played by the twins!)

The last chapter was regarding Tamaki’s dream about Haruhi being freaky poor (at least 20 times worse than she really is). He got so worried that he brought the entire gang to visit her home. However, Tamaki & Haruhi fell into THE position (him on top of her) when Haruhi’s dad caught them! To be continued in the next volume.

Reviews:

The first 2 chapters are really interesting. We get to find out what really goes on in Haruhi’s mind. She’s really innocent regarding how she could be taken advantage by guys who are physically stronger than her. I hope that she will learn that she’s not alone in the world – that she can depend on her friends. No matter in manga or real-life, we don’t live on a one-man’s island.

There’s nothing much to review about for the rest of the volume, except that the last chapter (where the host club visited Haruhi) is really funny! I can’t wait to review about what happen to Tamaki when Haruhi’s dad caught them in such a dangerous position.

Diamond Head Vol. 1

Synopsis:

Ichikashi Nanao just transferred to Mehabia Catholic School and she was lost on her first day there when she met a beauty accompanied by 2 equally good looking guys who literally pointed her in the right direction.

During a conversation with her new classmates, she found out that she’s a supposed “genius” because she was the only one who ever manage to pass the school’s transfer exam. On coming out of the girl’s toilet, she bumped into the beauty she met just now – coming out of the boys toilet! Looking downwards (at his pants!), she finally realizes that he is a guy. According to the girls, seems that our 3 guys are pretty famous around school – freshman Tachibana Katsuma and 2^nd year Douno Kirihiko as well as 2^nd year Hanugi Leica (the beauty of mixed heritage). All three are from prestigious family, therefore considered as upper-class as well as a little stuck-up. Nanao defended them by saying that compared to the other 3, she felt that the girls were ‘fakes’ (Honestly – why bother making enemies with these girls!).

At the cafeteria, Nanao was invited by Katsuma to sit with them. They invited her into their club (where only the 3 of them are members) – the judicature club. It deals with disputes and judges the students in court. Nanao refused them.
Someone started playing pranks on Nanao, throwing her shoes away and ruining her books. While cleaning the poolside, she had a fight with 3 of her classmates when they pushed her into the pool. Katsuma saved her with both Leica & Kirihiko looking from the sidelines. Nanao decided to sue the girls. Kirihiko was the council for plaintiffs, Katsuma for defense, and Leica was the judge. With overwhelming evidence, Nanao won her case, but was ordered by the judge to join the judicature club!

The club got their second case when a girl, Azusa Takagi wants to sue her friend Miyuki for pushing her down the stairs. It seems that Miyuki is currently dating Azusa’s ex-boyfriend Mizuno, when Azusa advice her to leave him because he is not a good guy. Leica told Nanao to assist Katsuma in the defense of Miyuki. He wanted her to try defending the “person in wrong”. Nanao scolded Leica for being no help at all in the case. However, as Katsuma & Kirihiko later explained to her, Leica wanted to help very much, but as the judge, he should not be bias in any case, and therefore should not be involved at all in the investigation.

During the court session, Katsuma suddenly clutches his stomach in pain and had to be taken away. Nanao took over as defense council. She managed to persuade Miyuki to tell the truth. It was Mizuno that pushed Azusa down the stairs. Azusa decided to cancel her claims. She only wanted the judicature club to find out the truth. The trial ended with Nanao finding out that Katsuma only pretended to be sick.

The last chapter of the first volume revolves around the school fair. The judicature club decided to open a bishoujo tea house (a tea house where the waitresses dressed in cute outfits)! Nanao initially refused because she thought that she was going to be the bishoujo, however when the poster came out, she realizes that it was Leica who was going to be the bishoujo (kyaa!!!)
The tea house was a success. The guys were all enchanted by Leica’s beauty, and the girls love taking photos with Katsuma & Kirihiko. However, judicature club style, a dispute between 2 guys started and they decided to hold trial there and then! One accused the other for spilling spaghetti sauce on his favourite shirt. The trial was held, and as usual, Kirihiko represented the plaintiff, Katsuma the defendant & Leica the judge.

After much discussion and evidence (which include some really outrageous stuff), it turns out that Leica was the guilty one! The sauce from the plates that he was carrying spilled by accident when he was pushed by another customer. Because Leica was so cute in his waitress uniform, the guy decided not to sue him.
The volume ended with Katsuma carrying Nanao away to dance while Leica look at them in envy.

Reviews:

Whew! It is a long synopsis. This manga is written & drawn by Mizushiro Setona sensei, and she is good! I’m totally in love with her works. Even though her works are categorized under shoujo, it is anything but just that. When reading the front part, everything points to a light over-used storyline – with the usual bishounen, bratty female classmates etc. But the judicature club change all that. Suddenly, the storyline revolves around the cases taken on by the club. With just 3 chapters in this volume, it seems like a short read. In fact, the good storyline made it feel short. It was only when I typed this synopsis that I realize how long it was!

I seriously recommend this manga to all. It has nice simple drawings, but its strength is in the storyline, although sometimes it may seem outrageous. An example would be the tea house case. During trial, the chemistry teacher was brought in to analyze the spaghetti sauce sample. This would only ever appear on manga.

A note aside, I should point out the different spellings used for Leica. Sometimes, it was Ricker, sometimes Leica. However, I would be using the latter as it seems to be more correct in the Japanese pronounciation. For the next 2 volumes (yes, this manga is only 3 volumes long!) I will try to shorten my synopsis as well. There will always be the same repetition for each case – as in Leica would be the judge, Kirihiko for the plaintiff & Katsuma represents the defendant. Nanao would flit between the 2. I would not mentioned the names of the characters who appear on trial because it would only make my synopsis messy.

Tenshi no Kiss Vol. 4

Synopsis:

The all-important Cool performance was in less than a day but Akira was still not back yet. However, Diana in England found out that he already checked out from the hotel, which means that Akira was MIA. After hearing from Diana, Aya broke down and wanted to rush to England (which is quite impossible, really). Of course, Tetsuya stopped her. In England, Diana finally found Akira squatting at the side road. She persuaded him to return to Japan.

On performance day itself, everyone was nervous because Akira was not there. Aya suddenly appeared in short hair (looking very boyish, I must say). But during the dance itself, Mr. Suehiro (the old geezer!) realizes that Akira was not among the dancers. He demands that the performance be canceled at once. Luckily, he was overpowered and tied up!

The audiences also started to notice that Akira was not there. They stood up to leave when they were splattered with sweat drops of the onstage dancers. It made them realize that the dancers were giving their all for this performance, and this made the sat back down. Backstage, Akira finally appeared!

The audience was really estatic to see him dance onstage. Of course, when it was Aya’s turn to dance with him for the final part, the audience was shocked to see her – since she was dressed is a DRESS! It was a beautiful dance though, and the people were impressed even though she was a girl (remember that Cool was suppose to be an all male band). A little girl even handed her a bouquet of flowers and said that Aya inspired her to dance.

The final 2 pages showed Diana practicing ballet again and also a positive review of Cool’s anniversary performance by a dance magazine.

Review:

Over all, this is quite a nice ending to the manga. Predictable - yes, but still not so bad. However, I felt that the part about Akira being the only dancer worthy to watch is not “right”. Cool was supposed to be a group who accepts only talented dancers. Then why was it that the audience wanted to only see Akira? A performance is not just about one lead dancer. Its’ success depends on the entire group. The lack of Akira in the performance will affect the performance, but not suppose to be as serious as the story seems to imply.

And why are they (initially) disappointed to see a female dancer? I would understand those girl audiences (who are only there to see a cute male dancing), but what about Mr. Suehiro? Granted that Aya was weaker and slower, but she gives the performance a grace that only a female dancer can give.

Tenshi no Kiss Vol.3

Aya & Akira paid a visit to Diana who was recuperating after her surgery at the hospital. They met Mr. Jones there as well and discussed about Diana’s condition. Mr. Jones also revealed that he knew about Aya replacing Diana in the performance (see prev. vol).

The practice continues for the anniversary performance. Aya is lagging behind the others. On Sunday, Akira took her to meet a potential sponsor for the performance. She did not make a good impression in front Mr. Suehiro, a perverted but rich old man. However, Mr Suehiro did went to watch Cool’s practice, and agreed to sponsor them – with one simple condition – that Aya will not be performing together with them. Akira agreed to the request. In anger, Aya splashed a pail of cold water at him. She refused to give up. Later on, Tetsuya told Aya that Akira was sick, Feeling guilty because she was the cause of it, Aya visited him and took him to the doctor, staying with him until he got better. Right after Aya left, Diana appeared, looking battered and told Akira that she wants to die.

Aya continued to beg Mr. Suehiro to allow her to dance. Even though he deny her, she continued practicing. The scene shifts to the hospital where Akira caught Diana cutting her wrists. Fearing for her safety, he decided to bring her back to England. He had a fight with the other members because of this. Aya just continue practicing. Diana came to see her and they talk for a while. Aya said some supportive words and encourages Diana to continue dancing no matter whether she could dance as well as before, as long as she loves dancing. Akira also came to meet her, and they danced to the music phantom dance. It is the dance that both of them were supposed to perform at the anniversary. Akira kissed her and said that he will try to be back as soon as possible. The next day, Akira left.

Just in case Akira couldn’t make it back in time for the performance, the members decided to allow Aya in the dance as a backup plan. However, the practice is so tough that it is pulling Aya down. She decided to look for Mr. Jones. In England, Diana confronted her mother and finally told her that she will no longer be tied down by her. Her mother slapped her and scolded her by saying that even if she couldn’t dance, her mother will always be there for her.

Back in Japan, Mr. Jones explained to Aya about how Diana as a child always worries that her mother will leave her if she couldn’t dance. Since her mother has always drove her to dance her best, Diana always thought that dancing is the only way to make sure that her mother will continue loving her. Akira was able to help her because both of them are alike in this & many other ways. Akira’s own mother committed suicide in front of him after her husband left her. Mr. Jones worries that if Cool ever disband, Akira will not be able to take the blow.

Review:

First of all, I apologize for not producing any synopsis/review for such a long time. I’ve been too busy recently and I’ll try to make it up by having at least 4 -5 entries by the end of the month.

Back to the review! We have more insights to the inner feelings of both Akira & Diana (especially towards the end of the volume). I can really understand their actions now that I know how tough their childhood must have been. Parents can really be oppressive sometimes, especially when their children are talented at something (in this case – ballet). They don’t realize that this is bad for their kids emotionally.

Aya’s been really determined in this volume. I’m glad that she manages to drive herself to such extent. Luckily for her, every time she’s on the verge of breakdown, somebody will be there to pull her back up. Mr. Suehiro is such a pompous old geezer – just because she’s not good enough, he wants to cut her off without giving her any chances to improve. I hate this kind of people with the mindset where “It’s either u be the best, or you be nothing at all”.

Volume 4 will be the final volume where the ending story will be shorter than usual (because ½ of the volume actually consists of a one-shot, which I will not be summarizing.)

Tenshi no Kiss Vol.2

Synopsis:

Continuing the arc from the last volume, Nacchan prevents Aya from leaving for the competition by threatening suicide. It almost became a reality when she accidentally stumble, but Aya managed to save her in time. In the process, Nacchan fainted. Desperate, Aya called Akira and asked him to take care of Nacchan while she rushed to the competition. Luckily, she was not late. However, Aya was clearly tired, out of breath and sweating profusely. Before her turn onstage, Akira called her and told her that Nacchan is among the audience and rooting for her. She also wanted to apologize to Aya for all that she had done. The call boosted Aya’s will and she put on a great show. Everyone was amazed by it, even Aya herself who never thought she was able so dance to well.

Seeing Aya’s performance, Yoshino threw everything into the wind, and gave a surprisingly emotional but unorthodox performance, thereby losing any bit of chance of winning the competition. However, as Yoshino later explained to Aya, eventhough she has a strong personality – she made herself a perfect “textbook” dancer because it was the only way she thought she could surpass Aya. But she know better now, and she will find another dance troupe which will allow her to express her emotions.

As expected, Aya won the competition hands down, and she rushed off to find Akira. That night, Cool had a welcoming party for Aya but someone – Diana Roberts – came to Akira in the gardens, hug him and exclaimed that she “misses” him. It seems that the British Regents Ballet are having a tour in Japan with Diana as their lead in the performance, SwanLake. And Diana & Akira were actually classmates years ago.

During their practice sessions (which Diana attended to watch them), Aya made a lot of mistakes but at the end of the session, Akira still told her that she will be having a small part in the upcoming Cool performance. Both of them decided to continue their practice together and didn’t notice Diana leaving. When they were searching for her later on, Aya found her at the theatre (where Regents will be performing SwanLake practicing. As she watches in awe, she realizes how superior Diana’s dancing were, but then found out that Diana’s ankle was seriously hurt. Diana forced her to keep quiet about it. Aya approaches Akira and scolded him for not doing anything even though he knew about Diana’s injury. He just answered that it was none of her business.

On the debut performance of SwanLake, Aya was still convinced that Diana will definitely fall – especially for Act 2. She went looking for Diana and told her that she will take over her place for Act 2, thereby allowing her to finish performing her last dance. Using heavy makeup, both of them manage to disguise Aya, but her dancing was still not good enough. Many of the audience realizes that it was not Diana who was dancing onstage, but only Akira & the Cool troupe dancers knew that the ballerina was Aya. After Diana took over again in Act 3, she danced incredibly and they had a standing ovation that night. Diana collapsed right then.

Review:

I’ll be giving a shorter review this time. There is more development with the relationship between Aya & Akira, with Diana being the third party to give the story more twists.

The artwork is nice. There are more focus on the dancing, especially for the ballet performances, as we get some glimpse at both Aya & Yoshino’s performances in the competition finals as well as Diana’s performance as Odette in SwanLake. I especially like the drawing in the scenes with Diana’s dancing. She is incredibly beautiful as Odette. Overall, my review would be the same as in volume 1 with the exception on what was already mentioned above. As usual, I highly recommend this manga to all.

Tenshi no Kiss Vol.1

Synopsis:

The first 2 pages is about Aya in a ballet competition and she had an accident on stage when she suddenly woke up. Actually, she was just dreaming about the accident one month ago and it has been a recurring nightmare for her. As her leg was healed, she now continue her ballet lessons. Her sensei insisted on giving her the lead part, Aurora, in the upcoming performance Sleeping Beauty, even though the part had been given to Yoshino, the dancer who had won the competition instead of Aya. However, the accident left Aya with a bad case of stage fright. The psychological trauma cause her to fall again during the performance. In the end, she decided to quit ballet as she couldn’t dance anymore.

One day in the park, she was caught crying by a guy named Tetsuya. It turns out that they were schoolmates and he invited her to a ballet recital. This was how she got to know Cool, an all-male ballet troupe, led by an incredible dancer, Akira. Aya was so enraptured by their performance that she went to beg Akira to allow her to join their troupe. Surprisingly, he agreed but with one condition: Aya had to compete and win in the upcoming National Ballet Competition!

However, Akira wasn’t really serious about it and this really pisses Aya out. She was determined to prove her worth no matter what, and she continued her preparation for the competition while spending every bit of her free time watching Cool’s members practices. Seems like she had a plan hidden up her sleeve. In their next performance, she actually poisoned one of the members, and took over his role! All of this showed Akira her determination.

The National Ballet Competition has finally arrived. During the preliminaries, it was quite clear that the competition was between Aya & Yoshino, whom the latter decides to quit the ballet school if she loses. During the prelim, someone sabotaged Aya by putting glasses in her shoes. She suspected it was Yoshino & slapped her. Aya was so pushed to win that she purposely show the judges her superiority in technical skills, but in the process, lost what is most important in ballet – the feel and emotions. One of the judges, Mr. Jones actually walk off in the middle of her performance and gave her 0 points. Aya barely pass the prelims.Mr. Jones is actually a teacher at the Regents Ballet School in England and used to teach Diana Roberts, a world-renowned dancer. After watching some of her performances on video, Aya realizes her mistake and started practicing again.

On the day of the final, Nacchan (Aya’s best friend in the ballet school) went missing. Seems that she's upset that she was eliminated in the prelims. Aya went looking for her, and found her in the ballet school. Nacchan admitted that it was her who put the glasses in Aya’s shoes, not Yoshino. She has been jealous of Aya for a long time. Now she threatened to commit suicide if Aya leaves the room, thereby preventing Aya from making it to the competition.

Review:

This is the first time I’ve read a manga regarding dancing, ballet in this particular one. Naturally, I have high expectations with it. As the manga is only 4 volumes long (with the 4th volume only a chapter – the other chapters are oneshots), it is jam packed, and the storyline fast-paced. The characters are introduced quickly to us, but it is good that there are not too many side characters to bother us. The plot is interesting with a couple of twist here and there to keep up the tension.

As this manga is about dancing, I expect the artwork to be beautifully lined, especially the dancing scenes. The mangaka, Ashihara Hinako-san, did not disappoint. The dancing scenes, especially the ones with Cool, was incredible and full of lovely forms. The only complain is that there are not enough of these scenes, and each performances, or scenes are incredibly short. In fact, they couldn’t tell much story, other than that it’s just good dancing. There wasn’t much technical explanation regarding the dances as well.

Other than these scenes, the artwork of the rest of the manga is quite pretty and sleek, but normal. Although, I must say that Hinako-san took advantage with background features. Most of the time, she only emphasized on the characters, whereas the background are always simply drawn or otherwise empty. The body & facial proportions of the characters are also not always perfect (as in naturally correct) . Of course such emphasis are not necessarily bad and this is a manga after all, where the extremes are to be expected.

Over all, I strongly recommend this manga to all shoujo manga fans. It is quite interesting to read something with a different plot setting, instead of the usual high-school girl-boy relationship.

Ouran Koukou Vol.2

Synopsis:

A new volume, a new chapter. Things starts off with Tamaki wanting Haruhi to turn back into a “girl”. However, he soon realizes that she will not be able to join the host club anymore if she is not a “guy”. Furthermore, Tamaki is a 2^nd year student, whereas Haruhi & the twins are not only 1^st years, but classmates as well.

The first chapter concentrates on the physical examination that all students must undergo. It was really incredible to see the length the hosts go to just to cover up Haruhi’s real identity – Tamaki even don a brown wig to pretend as her! That part was hilarious!

Another interesting chapter is the last one in this volume where the host club decided to have a holiday at a resort under the Ootori’s (Kyouya’s family) Group Corp. which is shaped to be like a tropical island (a fake one, naturally). Of course, it turns out that the resort is still under development, and that Kyouya brought them there as guinea pigs. Through yet another series of mishaps, Hunny went missing and everybody started searching for him.

All in all, the 2^nd volume brought new revelations regarding the main characters – we see that Haruhi is now able to recognize both the twins (she’s the only one able to in the entire manga) and could even point out the differences between them both. There was also much explanation about Hunny & Mori-senpai. Turns out that they’re cousins and the the Morinozuka family have been serving the Haninozuka family for generations before they became family through marriage. Hunny is also a world-class martial artist (even better than Mori!) despite his size and Lolita image. We can also see that Kyouya is a manipulative guy who’s make use of people for his own gain – but we all still love him, don’t we?

Review:

More character development here. We were revealed to more insight to our host’s stories, especially the one with Hunny & Mori. Hatori-san is taking her time slowly to bring about the real plot behind all the sub-plots. Only a sip was given, not even a mouthful... it just makes me want to skip all the front volumes and jump straight to the important parts. However, that means I will miss all the bits & pieces which when joint together, actually makes the manga quite enjoyable and which will connect us with the characters. Unfortunately, there are parts which I get bored easily.

The drawings are still not up to par here. It was only in the later volumes (when the manga has gain a steady fan-base) that more care was taken of for the artwork. This is very similar to mangas such as Hana Yori Dango (in which the artwork of the earlier volumes are “poison” to the eyes but the back volumes are beautiful) where the mangaka is only able to afford to hire assistants after the popularity of their work increase.

Onnako wa Yoyu

Synopsis:

Tomomi is a high school girl who with her two best friends - Chika & Kaede are in the broadcasting club where Ojika-sempai was the ex-president of.

Tomomi is in love with her longtime childhood friend, Sawada. Unfortunately, he likes another girl instead. However, Tomomi decided to keep quiet about her feelings for him and was even willing to help him woo the other girl by giving him tickets so he could go with the girl to a performance. The first chapter is dedicated to how Tomomi loses her first love and how she overcome it. She is also more appreciative of everything around her, from the beauty of the surroundings as well as the support of her friends.

At this same time, it was made quite clear that Ojika-sempai is interested in Tomomi. He has a wonderful & commanding voice, in which he uses to try to court her subtly. In the 2nd chapter, through a series of 'events', Ojika-sempai manage to go home with Tomomi and met her parents (and her very sexy & open sister). It was also reveal that Ojika used to be in the tennis club, but he quitted for some unknown reason and joint the broadcasting club instead.

By the 3rd chapter, both Tomomi and Ojika are quite close with each other already. However, Chika (and Tomomi's sister) warned her that Ojika is a playboy and that she shouldn't be so close with him in fear that she might be toyed by him. Tomomi answered that she only respected him and the one she really like was actually Sawada. Unluckily, Ojika was nearby and overheard her. Later when they were alone at the nurse office, he made a move on her, but later laughed it off as a joke and said that he will always be the senpai that she respects.

Later on, the 3 girls together with Ojika's classmate, Takahashi, decided to visit Ojika (who was living alone) when they found out he was sick. Takahashi also revealed that Ojika's parents actually favoured his dead brother more, and that Ojika has always been like a shadow next to his brother. Furthermore, Ojika actually decided to play tennis to replace his dead brother, who was a good player, and after reaching the finals in the national, decided that his responsibility was done and his brother could rest in peace now, therefore he quitted.

Tomomi's view of Ojika became more and more positive as she sees him in a different perspective now. At the ending of the manga, Ojika was shown leaning on her shoulder while thanking her (this was viewed by Kaede & Chika).

Review:

Although only 1 volume long (3 chapters in total), Hikawa-sensei manage to cramp everything in perfect style. When reading this manga, I don't feel rushed at all. In fact, it is a very calming and straightforward story with no wasted or twisted plot. This is one of the manga that makes me feel very refresh because of its simplicity. For now, Onnako wa Yoyu is the only oneshot manga (i know oneshot is different than 1 volume, but it's still very short, therefore, i consider it as a oneshot) which is able to portray its story realistically in such a short amount. There are loads of humor offered through the secondary characters, especially Kaede & Chika. There are even enough time to show the possible blossoming love of these 2 characters as well, even though most of the story is centered around Tomomi, first with Sawada, and later in a much greater degree, with Ojika-sempai.

As for the artwork - I must say that it is alot better compared to say - Hoshi no Harmony. The lines are clearcut, and clean. The females characters drawn are those very cute and pretty, although the male characters are not exceptional (not even Sawada), except for Ojika-sempai. I'm guessing that Hikawa-sensei wants to emphasize on the looks of our main male character, and therefore bestow good looks only on him.

In conclusion, I felt really satisfied, and also a little sad after finishing the entire story. It was good, but I wish it was longer so that i could enjoy it for a longer time.

Ouran Koukou Vol.1

Synopsis:

The story starts with our lead character looking for a quiet place to study (in school) but instead stumble into the third music room. BUT, the room was not used by music students. Instead, there was the Host Club – comprising of 6 really hot guys (or should I say 5 hot guys with 1 very very cute guy).
Needless to say, Haruhi (that’s our lead) was shocked into breaking an 8-million yen vase, and therefore have to now be the club’s dog!

Alright – this synopsis requires more explanation, since you most probably won’t understand if you didn’t read the real thing.

Haruhi is the poorest student in Ouran Gakuen, a school made only for the pedigrees and the rich. You’ll either have to be a blue blooded noble of some kind or rich enough to buy a useless piece of ceramic for 8-million yen. Which is why, Haruhi is the one and only scholarship student in the entire academy.

Our 6 beautiful guys open the host club to serve the females of the school (it seems that they have a LOT of free time in that school). We have the King – Tamaki (who is also the Headmaster’s kid), the very cute Lolita type – Haninozuka (Hunny for short), the serious samurai type – Morinozuka (Mori). The twins with the taste for incest – Hikaru & Kaoru as well as the “perfect” vice president – Kyouya.

That about sums it all up. Oh, and just in case you didn’t realize it from the start, Haruhi is a girl. She just have very low consciousness regarding gender.
Anyway, the guys found out by accident that Haruhi actually make a really cute “guy who looks like a girl” and a natural talent to be a host .Which is why she was upgraded to one. And from there we will start the journey of Ouran High School Host Club.

Review:

The storyline starts off good, but after the 2^nd chapter, we can actually recognize a pattern going on (which in the next few volumes will tend to get a little tiring.) But no worries, the pattern will be broken here and there, especially in the back volumes where the plot is going to reach the climax soon.

Each new chapter brings about a new story. You can actually recognize that from the different costume they wear at the club (it seems that they’re trying and experiencing different customs, but that is just BS that Kyouya spout to the students parents... hehehe)

A new story arc will definitely bring about a new set of costumes (may it be a southern costumes, to samurai, to yukata, etc)

A note here is that I will definitely not be summarizing those little chapters which usually bring about temporary supporting characters which are not important to the main story. I might even skip a volume or 2, or maybe compress more than 1 volume into a single review.

I would say that Ouran actually have many weaknesses that might turn you away from the manga. One is the plot development which is too slow (as mentioned earlier). Another is the artwork. Although the characters drawn are really good looking (especially Tamaki & Haruhi) but one thing I find annoying is that when Hatori-san (the mangaka) draws the characters at an angle other than the front facing, it will turn out really bad. Another thing to notice is that the manga in total is very messy, with plenty of bits and pieces here and there. If you really want to see how the characters look at their best, watch the anime!

However, there is 1 strength regarding the artwork which I really appreciate is that each character looks completely different from one another. This is especially important when we have so many main characters ( I consider each host as a main character). Even the temporary supporting characters look different. I am able to recognize and remember all the main characters by the end of volume 1 due to the different looks and also to the characteristics of the character (am I making sense?? I will explain more in my review of the next volume.)

These few strengths as well as character development brought Ouran to a much higher level than it would have been. Which is why it is understandably one of the most popular shoujo manga currently.

Skip Beat! Vol.3

Synopsis:

Continuing the arc story from the end of volume 2, we have Kyouko now challenging Ruriko for the movie role. She totally blow everyone away with her skills, although it was later revealed that these skills were trained by Sho Fuwa’s mother (tea-ceremony skills, and on how to be the perfect host in front of guests). Naturally, there is also the part where Kyouko was acting together with Ren – and she realized that she is wayyyy below him in terms of acting skills – and that he was the one who brought out all the “correct reactions” needed. In other words, Ren actually forced her to act unconsciously.

However, Kyouko lost the challenge as she fainted midway. All was not lost though, as Ruriko finally see what a spoilt brat she has been and she actually gave Kyouko full marks! (Note: read my synopsis for volume 2 if you do not understand this).

After all that has happened, the director decided to let Kyouko have a special photo session as a remembrance of her work done (which means that she gets to put on makeup again... hehehehe). She met Ren there and there were some “interesting” scenes (Note: I ALWAYS find scenes between our 2 main characters “interesting”, if you get what I mean).

This volume also brought back some important side characters. First up is Kotonami-san (which I will call Moko-san from now on, because that’s the nickname given by Kyouko). Moko-san was at the same interview with Kyouko in volume 1, but she failed as well and is now the official 2^nd member of LoveMe section. Appearing as well is Maria, the grand daughter of LME’s president. It turns out that Maria’s mother died in an accident when on her way to celebrate Maria’s birthday. Therefore, she blamed herself for it and thought that her father hates her for that as well.

LME is coming out with a play which plot coincides with Maria’s story. However, Maria disagree with the storyline in which the child was to believe that her father didn’t blame her at all for her mother’s death. This is why Maria created so much trouble on set. The president requested that Kyouko would draw her out and try to help her.

Things came to a headstand when Kyouko unknowingly got herself into yet another challenge with the actresses of the play. She agreed to play the character of the child’s sister in which she was suppose to convince the little girl that her father doesn’t hate her.

Not surprisingly, Kyouko manage to start off really well (and really scary as well!!!). As for how this new story arc ends, we shall have to wait for the next volume.

Review:

Phew!!! There is a LOT going on in this volume. The ending to the “Ruriko-Kyouko’s challenge” was really good. There was nothing too obvious that will help us predict what is going on. The surprise elements are placed well indeed.Some scenes not to be missed includes the one where Kyouko found out that Moko-san would be a fellow member. It was fantastically funny. I really like both Moko-san & Maria, and I am glad that they will be permanent supporting cast in this manga.

Another thing to notice is the incredible talent of Kyouko in making dolls (voodoo dolls to be exact). She made one of Ren & Fuwa each. It was so detailed right down to the clothes that they wear! And she even have different “face” for different expression. Kyouko sure have a lot of weird talents. I wish I have one of those Ren dolls... Maria asked Kyouko to give the Ren doll to her, but she refused as well. Guess that means I won’t be getting one myself in this lifetime...

Skip Beat! Vol.2

Synopsis:

The 2^nd volume opens with Kyouko meeting Sho at the gas station she was working at. It was a really unpleasant situation for her as she was snubbed by him. Luckily for our heroine, the president of LME has taken notice of her, and therefore, accepts her as the first member of the Love-Me section. The members are suppose to accomplish any kind of tasks given to them by others (such as artists, managers etc) and they will be given points based on their performances.

We also have more insights to the thinking of Tsuruga-san as well. He knew that Kyouko’s purpose of becoming an actress is just to take revenge on Sho. But this is against the ethics and beliefs of Tsuruga towards his work– which is why – he doesn’t (seem) to like Kyouko.

Anyway, moving on to one of Kyouko’s 1^st tasks (actually her first task is to carry luggage!) – she is to attend to idol singer and all-round bratty princess wannabe, Ruriko Matsunai who is acting together with Tsuruga-san (such coincidence, ne?). Plenty of incidents happened and Kyouko took over Ruriko’s role in the movie! Read the manga to find out more.

Review:

In this volume, there are more of Kyouko-Tsuruga scenes (thank you Nakamura-sensei!!!) and they’re well executed. Plenty of laughs as well. I love the scenes in which Kyouko was cleaning the floor! The part where Kyouko found out that she gets to wear make-up (because of the movie shooting) was priceless as well. But I think the best scene in this volume is at the ending where Tsuruga & Ruriko saw Kyouko after her makeover. The transformation was amazing!

Ah, and I forgot – Tsuruga & Sho finally met each other!!! It was quite interesting to see how each think of the other. Sho was full of anticipation and wants to show off, but Tsuruga just coolly brush him off (kyaaa!!!! How cool is that!)

Skip Beat! Vol.1

Synopsis:

The main character, Mogami Kyouko is a polite, nice young high school girl - except that she doesn't goes to high school. Instead, Kyouko is working 3 part-time jobs and slaves away everyday, just for the sake of her prince charming – Fuwa Sho. Sho is an idol singer who on the surface is a perfect guy in every way, but in reality is a selfish and egoistical bastard who’s only using Kyouko as a servant.

Finally, Kyouko finds out the truth – and did she break down and cry? NO! She did a 180 degrees change of personality. Her only purpose now is to get revenge on Sho – and the best way to do it is to get into the entertainment circle and beat him in it! And thus, began the adventures and struggles of our heroine in her quest for revenge!

Review:

This manga is hysterically good! It has a nice pace for the storyline, and most of the main characters are introduced well enough. There’s loads of humours as we get to see Kyouko transform from a weak girl (who’s only purpose in life is to serve Sho) to a demonic person. We also get to meet the super uber cool Tsuruga Ren (which I am definitely falling in love with!) although most of this volume revolves around Kyouko & Sho.

The art is clean & nice – not too much mess around although Nakamura-sensei tends to add some bits & pieces to explain the feelings & thoughts of the character. I particularly love the Kyouko demons (they are a character all by themselves!) and we will definitely see more of them in future volumes.

I also like the fact that the storyline isn’t too shoujo-ish . Kyouko was unable to pass the acting test at LME (the company where actor Tsuruga is with). It was also nice to see that even with so much determination & will, one still cannot get through that easily. In Kyouko’s case, it was because of her lack of love.

And before I end this review, I must add one more thing.BAKA-SHO!!!!!!!! I hope you will rot in hell for how you treated Kyouko. You will never be the lead character in this manga!!!!! That honour will go to Tsuraga-san!!!!
